...when gun clubs were quite common in high school,
My dad went to Columbus HS in daBronx. Like many others in NYC they had a rifle club. An area of the basement, the under the gym was used as a range.
When I grew up in Rockland City there were Black kids in Hillburn who'd walk along Rt59 carrying .22s. In spite of race relations being what they were nobody gave it a second thought. They were making their way into the woods to hunt small game, it was no big deal.
