Even if by some good fortune, that were the verdict, the very act of having to go through this painful trial abnd spend money on lawyers is in and of itself a punishment.

He shot nobody. Two gangs/cartels were battling on his ranch. After the shooting stopped, he went out to check on the livestock and found a dead man in full body armor.
The law is so corrupt in Santa Cruz County that they immediately pinned it on Kelley.
The bullets were removed from the body so that there could be no forensic discovery.
Kelley tried to get the trial moved out of Santa Cruz County but it did not happen.
