For those who think that DC fast chargers (such as the Tesla Supercharger) will solve their range anxiety problems, think again.

BMW EV tells driver: “NO FAST CHARGING for two days!”

LOL!

Our gas pickup is for the times: 1) we need 2 cars for the day (to split up to run separate errands), and 2) for the times an EV won't do (i.e. pickup chores, if we go on a trip with few charging options, or if I go on a trip without my wife since she's the one who wants to stop every 200 miles and walk around for 10-15 minutes). Having one of each car type gives us options to handle that day's needs with the most efficient car type for that day.

The Dims try to make every decision a polar decision (either this or that, not both, either EV or gas car, not both, etc.). Often times the best option is option C: some of both.

And in all the noise and shouting, eventually what is the Libs plan to come up with some kind of lubricating oil for the engine?

Impress your friends and neighbors by having your shiny new EV parked in your driveway.

...we need 2 cars...

I don't see how you can justify two cars. Now, eight cars:

The Infiniti for the wife.

The Malibu for the kid.

The Durango for the other kid.

The Neon for when I don't want to beat up other cars commuting.

The CR-V for carrying four people, some stuff, and including bad weather (think going to the airport).

The Expedition for carrying eight people, more stuff, towing, and really bad weather.

The BMW for when I'm feeling good about myself.

The 1967 Cougar for when I'm feeling really good about myself.

Eco friendly? The truth is no, just the opposite.

Oh they can be towed, and the best part is if done smartly they can have it charge the batteries while doing it.

Hooking it up with a front wheel dolly so the back tires rotate will charge it while being towed. Adds drag to the tow vehicle, but the weenie doing it usually is so self absorbed and in EV righteousness to them it’s “Free Energy” from the sucker doing the pulling.

I have rented a LOT and now lease a EV to charge for free from my solar panels on my roof. I have never had range anxiety the tech in the car shows you every available charger along your path and even let’s you reserve a spot if you prepay for it so no one else can use it even if they plug in it won’t charge for them they have to move.

Most people are city drivers less than 40 miles. Most of the time in the city is 5 miles to the convention, 5 miles to fancy dinner then back to the airbnb and uber to the nightlife areas. Even when I have a commute in a city I’m working in its never more than 20 miles each way usually ten or less.

That’s once a week charging if the hotel doesn’t have a L2 almost every 4* or above hotel valet service will plug your car into a L2 if they see it under 50% free of charge. EVs can be used for rod trips I have taken a Model S as far as Pensacola from Houston and back to Houston then DFW with it. The interstates are blanketed with Tesla Superchargers a 15min top up gets you three hours more in the seat and if needed to the next SC. Houston to New Orleans is a one stop trip. New Orleans to Biloxi direct have the casino valet charge it while you sleep the hangover off. Then direct to Pensacola. Never once through OMG I don’t have the range. Tesla will come rescue you if you are so technically inept to not listen to the car screaming at you to follow its lead to a supercharger that are every 100-50 miles along the busy interstates.

I’m interested how many acres of soybeans do you have and how many gallons of biodiesel per acre you are getting. Where do you source your methanol and calcium oxide from? What’s the cost per gallon not including your sweat equity?

I have 15,000 watts of commercial panels about to add another 10,000 watts worth on the steel building roofline. In the summer time it’s not uncommon to see 90+kWh of output from the system. My new to me model 3 takes 180 watt hours per mile A.C.Blasting in mixed exurban/urban driving. It has a 75kWh pack that will never see below 50% state of charge. So at most I need 45kWh that accounts for the loss of going DC to AC 240v back to DC. I’ll never pay for a single kWh as my 15kw system paid itself off a couple of years ago. The cost to me is the loss of sellable electricity to the grid at peak time vs putting it in my Tesla. My system can go grid free with a flip of a breaker too. That was the whole point of the system the Tesla is just gravy now. The dotgovs can turn off gas pumps in hours they cannot turn off the sun and that to me is priceless.

If I wanted to go the bio-diesel route, I understand filtered used cooking oil can be used.

My house cam with solar that I didn’t want. If it should work anywhere, it should work in Phoenix. However, the Solar City salesman front loaded the savings, so I am stuck with half of a 20 year lease on 6 kw system with no batteries. It gives me NO protection from blackouts, and is maybe a little better than breakeven after the $100/month lease payment. It is also a major headache if you want to sell the house, and Tesla, who bought out Solar City is poorly set up to deal with home sales with leased systems. I admire your system, but I couldn’t afford it, and we are in an urban center (Phoenix) right now, so in a SHTF scenario we would likely flee anyway.

“Also, what happens on a windless night to your home charger? Where is the power stored in such situations. “

Wind has never been needed in my charging situation but when the sun goes down if the grid is down for some reason I guess I could pull power from the trifuel 15,000 watt generator that backs up my panels. That puts out 50 amps at 240V it would fill that model 3 in three hours from 50% to 100%

It’s irrelevant since during the day it was filled in the first few hours of daylight on its designated charging day it only needs to be charged once a week from 50% to 100%. I take it to my fav sports bar 15 miles away or on a far trip to east Dallas that’s 45 miles away for an evening out in the trendy part or DFW. Either way it comes home to the stable of vehicles in the steel building. There is two 50 amp plugs in there it will be back at 80% in a few hours while I sleep. It’s cheaper to buy off peak power for it and sell every kWh turning the peak of the day vs using the panels to directly charge it. That doesn’t mean it can’t be charged by the panels it works out economically in my favor to not do that. Natural gas is cheap enough by the CCF that even running the generator would be cheaper than buying gasoline on a cost per mile basis but the extra wear on the generator would be not worth it only in grid down situations when it’s running anyways. There is a 250 gal propane tank on property I rent it for a back up fuel source should both the gas and electric grids go down like they nearly did in Feb 21. It’s only a few hundred extra a year to upgrade to a 500 gal tank but it just sits there the only thing I ever use it for is crawfish boils where you need high PSI propane for 200,000btu jet burners vs natural gas in the outdoor kitchen stove, grill and griddle.

I have looked at a ten kw wind turbine on a 30 meter monopole cable stayed tower why because wwhen it’s windy it tends to be cloudy so wind complements the panels well. It’s really.windy at night in the North Texas plains near Oklahoma and during the winter the wind howls at night all that energy is just begging to be captured.

Used cooking oil is largely a thing of the past. Nearly every restaurant has a commercial oil harvester that pays them for the oil no one gives it away anymore. Its worth $2+ per gallon to harvesters. Solar City and the like are making bank on your panels they fronted the loan capital that’s their biz model. To make a profit you have to wholesale buy the panels yourself upfront then get a install team sub contracted for yourself or you will be taken to the cleaners. A $80,000 system costs one quarter that in parts and labor. I know people in that game they are making a killing at it.

I have no interest to be up in roofs or selling solar mine was from a 04300341 mindset all the other benefits were incidental. I am however looking at funding HVDC 120kw two gun small charge stations at condos two of them can bring in 300,000+ per year in net revenue. I approached my former condo community it has 20 units in downtown Austin this last month with a two unit install I will also pay for the utility drop from Austin electric and the green box transformer pad. The condo will have exclusive access to them from 7 to 7 then public during the day open to all with CCS and NACS plugs.

Pay back time is 3 months and I will have a 10 year contract with the option to retain the hardware and transformer should they decide to leave the contract. It will be a nice large chunk of mail box money the only money that interests me now.
