Pit-bulls; almost as evil as Rotties.

I think you are not reading well today.

I am reading just fine. I'm just wondering how come Al doesn't help with training prospective owners. I'm also wondering just how hard this could be.

My daughter has a pit bull who is the sweetest dog imaginable. He is a big baby, affectionate, gentle, and well behaved. Because they have a reputation for being vicious, my daughter probably over disciplined him when he was a pup if he displayed any aggressive behavior. He is neutered, also, which probably helps to tone down the aggressiveness.

I think the owner must have bred these dogs to fight. That does happen frequently, and when the dogs go off, the results are ugly.

The AKC recognozes the "Bull Terrier". Same same dog the MSM ignorantly calls a PIT BULL.

The only point you reference in your first post was that of experience. I could only address that.

Help with "training"?

I can't train you to know the breed.

An abused dob is damaged goods. We "turn them around" which means we get them over their immediate mental problems. But their memories are still there. If you don't know the breed, you should not own a rescue.

All breeds have peculiarities of temperament. Dobs have theirs. I can't "teach" you that. You only get that by having one, or several, of the breed. The dogs teach you that. Not me.

Successful dob owners are usually repeat owners. Abused dogs come from those who were not successful, and should never have another one. Hope that clears it up for you.

Dachshunds can be obnoxious. Big difference though is that a mad Dachshund can't kill a grown man.

MY Dachshund went into a frenzy once...I couldn't stop her! She managed to get the neighbors' leftover fried chicken out of their garbage...

'Twas scary. We still have our thumbs, though.

:)

Virtually every time you read one of these stories, there is a mention of the animal having never done that before and being very sweet. What was her reason for buying an animal that powerful and potentially dangerous over another breed of dog that lacks the ability to kill? Why not get a lab, or an irish setter? Even if the risk is small, I don't see the point in running it when you have so many great alternatives.

Just out of curiousity, did she get him from a show breeder?

No. Just a punk in a trailer park trying to make some money by breeding his dogs.

Seriously? I'm not asking to be snarky; I'm just curious as to where the temperment comes from. It seems like the 'schizo' trait would be a huge liability for a show breeder...

A few years back, in the Washington DC area, a dachshund put a few weeks' old baby into critical condition (I don't know if the baby survived). The baby was in a playpen with nylon mesh screening on the sides. The mother was in the next room. The dog ripped a hole in the mesh and got several major bites into the tiny baby, before the mother could get to it.

I fear for all the FReepers who own this breed and think this would never happen with their dogs. I'm sure Mr. Sword said the same thing a couple of days ago. It is clear these dogs have never shown any sign they were capable of what they did. It's very frightening and should give all owners of these animals pause.

Good point. Every single time they have one of these stories people claim the dog had never done anything like it. Probably true or else they'd have put it down years ago.
