You Can Never Get Rid Of Matt Millen. Ever.

Yeah, close doesn't count. That has been heartening to see, many of the scores this season were close. This is how the Lions played under Morh, Mornh, under Marty, and weren't winning games (2/14, 3/13), but weren't looking too bad (just not scoring enough points).

Romo Empire wasn't built in a day

Matt Millen's wretched 6-year tenure as the Lions' general manager appears to be close to an end. Millen will sit down with owner William Clay Ford after the season, and that meeting is expected to result in Millen finally stepping down/getting fired. The Lions are 23-68 since Millen was hired, 2-9 this year.

Count on a lean list of free agents

Not even the Millen Man March conducted by angry Lions fans last week has been able to coax GM Matt Millen into resigning. League people who know Millen said the only way he'll be leaving his post is if owner William Clay Ford tells him to take a hike. And despite the Lions' pitiful 6-year record (23-72) under the former linebacker and broadcaster, the feeling right now is that Ford won't be telling him to do that. Millen is in the first year of a 5-year contract extension that Ford gave him before the start of the 2005 season. Just goes to show you that Dan Snyder isn't the league's only village idiot.

Now that the postseason sideshow is over, we can get back to what's *really* important -- the Detroit Lions. :')

...The point is to keep the pressure on Ford. Maybe he'll respond to it, maybe he won't. But that's the choice we're left with. We either have a terrible GM and owner with no fan pressure, or we have a terrible GM and owner with fan pressure. Which do you think is more likely to move things in the right direction?

The best thing about the day after the Super Bowl. The Detroit Lions are 0-0 again.

If they did wind up winning it all, we'd be so used to thinking about next year, we'd be lost.

I think at least with Kitna, they have a serviceable quarterback for a few years. I hope they don't draft Brady Quinn though. I would like to see them get JaMarcus Russell, he's another potential Vince Young.

That’s a switch — lack of Kitna is being touted as the reason for the Lions’ loss to the SB champs. But anyway, the schedule:

September 9, at Raiders
September 16, Vikings
September 23, at Eagles
September 30, Bears
October 7, at Redskins
October 21, Buccaneers
October 28, at Bears
November 4, Broncos
November 11, at Cardinals
November 18, Giants
Thanksgiving, Packers
December 2, at Vikings
December 9, Cowboys
December 16, at Chargers
December 23, Chiefs
December 30, at Packers

G’wan, predict outcomes, I dare ya. ;’)

Lions — undefeated, tied for first with Green Bay.

It’s been some years since they were 2 and 0, but I’m not sure how many.

They play the Eagles on the 23rd, and the Eagles play (I believe) tomorrow’s Monday Night Football game, so they’ll have only six days. Lions will be on the road. They won’t be getting any breaks in Philadelphia, so they’d better be on their game, stick with it, and not turn the ball over.

Today’s game against the Vikings was a messy affair, with something like 600 yards total offense, maybe it was higher. There were many turnovers, including one which helped decide the game in overtime. It looked like neither team truly wanted to win it. Bad, bad, bad.

Officiating wasn’t particularly bad, a nice change.

The Lions may surprise me, but I don’t see much to cheer about for the duration of the season. Before the Eagles loss, I thought the Lions might split with Green Bay, beat the Vikings and Bears twice each, and go .500 against everyone else, maybe make a wild card berth.

At this point, their play is so pathetic — beginning with a truly awful offensive line — that I don’t see the Lions winning more than a couple more games — one against the Vikings, and one against someone else on the schedule (you pick one).

Coming soon — “Kitna’s just not getting it done.”

(season so far)

September 9, at Raiders (won)
September 16, Vikings (won)
September 23, at Eagles (lost)
September 30, Bears (won)
October 7, at Redskins (lost)

(predicted outcomes, with the above proviso)

October 21, Buccaneers (win?)
October 28, at Bears (win?)
November 4, Broncos (loss)
November 11, at Cardinals (loss)
November 18, Giants (win?)
Thanksgiving, Packers (loss)
December 2, at Vikings (win)
December 9, Cowboys (loss)
December 16, at Chargers (loss)
December 23, Chiefs (win?)
December 30, at Packers (loss)

So, if they were to win as shown, the best finish would be 8-8. As noted above, I’ll guess 5-11.

I’m going to go with 8-8. They have some tough games left. I think the first game (Bucs) after the bye week is the predictor...it’s the sort of game they would lose in the past and proceed to tank for several weeks in a row. I think they squeak out a win, allowing them to play some inspired ball for a while and show hope for the future. The key is to get me to attend the game...the Lions are 2-0 this year (Raiders/Vikings) with me in attendance. ;-)

I have been waiting for the ‘rebuild’ of the Lions since the 50’s. They will continue to go nowhere as long as Ford owns the team.

They have squandered their draft picks, while they maintain one of the highest paid teams in the league.

As long as the pigeons keep filling the stadium, Ford could not care less.

And Dallas is still one of the undefeated teams in the NFL, (as of this writting).

This team is vastly different from the Lions of even last year; only 22 players on it are the same. Besides, 3-2 is hardly a reason to jump ship.

The Lions have a good QB, a good WR core and good special teams, although punt and kickoff coverage needs to be more consistent.

Next year, if Sean Rogers comes into camp in shape, the Lions get some good free agents and draft picks on defense along with some help on the offensive line (really, both lines) the Lions will be only a step or two from the NFC elite. In fact, one good pick at RB who can run, pass block, and catch will put the Lions in it.

The Packers have lost once (the Bears beat ‘em I think) and the Lions, well, they’d better come through, because Mariucci got fired a couple years ago for losing on Thanksgiving Day. It took Millen and Ford until the following Monday to fire Mooch, because Millen and Ford are both unfit for the roles they play.

The only way the Lions can wind up 10-6 (which would be decent) is to win four more games, out of the six which remain, and they have to play the Packers twice (including tomorrow), as well as the Cowboys, (Vikings), Chargers, and Chiefs. If they don’t at least split with the Packers, I don’t like their chances of making 9-7, much less 10-8.

If the Lions wind up with a winning record, great. If they do, I’d guess that they’ll beat the Vikings and Chargers.

If the Lions beat the Packers JUST ONCE this season I’ll be overjoyed. It sez here that the Lions beat ‘em on Thanksgiving in 2003:

http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20071121/SPORTS01/311210034

It also sez there that the Lions will lose tomorrow. I cheddar to think that’s true.
