It all comes down to the content owners, and whether they want to encrpyt their product or not. Both Apple and Microsoft provide DRM tools for those who do, in their role as technical facilitator. Right now some EU countries are suing Apple for using DRM, even though several of the content companies that are the ones requiring the DRM are actually based in Europe. But until the content owners themselves remove their own requirements for DRM, Apple and Microsoft will continue to be caught in the middle.

If posting “in defense of Apple” is an illness, the compulsion to post on such a thread pointing this out and adding no value to the conversation is a worse mental illness.

Perhaps you should see a therapist.

I didn’t say ripoff, spktyr did.

Indeed. So what then were you referring to? My response, as though it had been to you?

If you don’t even know what QDOS is, why did you respond with the holocaust denier reference? This is the internet, we have search engines here.

What's a "search engine?"

I responded because of the cultlike global assertion (recall the term "ripped off") -- but wait, that was to somneone else. What exactly is your problem?

(It's a rhetorical question, and rather than offer a smartass remark about online dictionaries, I'll just tell you that a "rhetorical question" is one the asker uses to make a point; he doesn't really want you to respond).

Perhaps you should read these:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/86-DOS

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apple_II

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computing_timeline_1950-1979

“1979 USA IBM saw its computer market dominance being eaten into by the new personal computers, such as the Apple II and the Commodore PET. IBM therefore started work on their own personal computer. When finished, this computer was released as the IBM PC on 12 August 1981.”

No Apple II, no IBM PC.

No IBM PC, no Microsoft colossus.

No Microsoft colossus, MIT dropout Bill Gates ends up spending his life as a McDonalds manager. Or worse, middle manager at IBM selling terminals until the company dies.

perhaps

Without MSFT, apple would have gone the way of bell bottoms and Osborne's.

BTW, It was Harvard, not MIT.

Talking to a Mac person is like trying to reason with a leftist. At its best, it's just no fun. Bill Gates is the archetypal Evil White Man, and everyone else is just another victim.

You are correct on that, it was Harvard. Even better - he wouldn’t have been working for IBM if they hadn’t built the IBM PC.

And no, I doubt Apple would have gone the way of the Osborne or the Timex-Sinclair. Long before Microsoft started to affect Apple, Apple had two *huge* killer apps; Visicalc and Pagemaker. Combined with the equipment Apple was producing, those alone would have ensured the company’s survival.

If there was no Microsoft, Apple would probably have done *better* than it has today.
