It took me a minute to write it down.

I did what you said and here's what I got...

Balloon Tray Notifications...
Display system tray notifications.
Display tray notification about update
Display tray notification about scanning
Display resident shield related tray notifications (automatic action)
Display state change notification [this one is unchecked]
Display E-mail scanner related tray notifications

They are all checked except the State change notification. Does that help?

Check Task Manager

Sorry, but where's that located?

Also, you may HAVE to if you want to do the uninstall.

I've already uninstalled the AVG and reinstalled it. I unchecked the AVG tool bar and it's gone. That's one problem down the drain. Now I just need to find out what on the 8.0 AVG is continually running and close it down.

Those items shouldn’t have anything to do with the program accessing your internet connection.

Are you sure it is AVG that is the culprit? You may have some other program that is pinging constantly, etc..

If you have broadband internet, you will get that, as your cable/dsl modem checks the ISP connection.

It has to be. I didn't have the BW usage churning every 13 seconds until I downloaded the new AVG.

I've turned off three items now. The Link Scanner, Resident Shield and Update Manager. It's now ticking every 15 seconds since I closed down the update manager.

I do have broadband but I can tell what I've used when I go to...Hughesnet bandwidth usage page. The numbers are very low. Until I loaded the new AVG, now it continues to use bandwidth.

I'll post this then go see my usage on Hughesnet.

This shows in hourly increments what I'm using.

I need to learn how to make a chart.

All of these are on May 22.

8:00-9:00am--16.11 MB
9:00-10:00am--53.23MB
10:00-11:00--7.88MB
11:00-12:00--6.44MB
12:00-1:00--1.20MB

Before today they averaged around numbers like this...1.44---0.93---1.61.

I heard thunder and looked out. It's black as pitch outside, storm coming.

Damn Murphy's Law. I might have to shut this down. As I said before, Murphy's Law is my co-pilot.

Task Manager should be available by right-clicking your taskbar and selecting Task Manager. The window that comes up will have a number of tabs. The first (Applications) shows the applications currently running that show on your taskbar. The second (Processes) shows the processes running. Look in this tab for processes that appear to be associated with AVG (they may read avg.exe or some such). If you have clear understanding of the association you can click on it then click the button [End Process]. But DON’T do that if your unsure.

Another thing would be to go to [Start] [Run] then type in “mscconfig” in the window bar. That will bring up an application that lists the various processes and *.ini files loaded with Windows. The Services and Startup tabs are the ones to look at for processes aligned with AVG.

Have fun, but BE CAREFUL!

Oh, I have my connection back.

Thank you. I had Kodak update running. I ended the task. That's all I was brave enough to tinker with.

I'm reading the task manager help file now. There's a lot of info there that I wasn't aware even existed. I'm the kind of computer user who turns it on and wants it to work - not know how it works. Guess I better change my ways. lol

There are a number of processes that can be disabled, or cancelled even. But it’s wise to leave alone unless you’re sure of what you’re doing.

One place you can check is at Tech Republic. Do a search on “Win XP Services that can be disabled”. It might take a little time to find the right thing, but I know there’s information there. Oh, you might have to sign up as a member, but it’s free and they have tons of good information. It’s worthwhile even if you’re not that computer savvy. If you’re using Vista, they likely have similar information for that system.

I also uninstalled the 8.0 full version. Used too much resources and slowed my box down WAAAAAY too much. I went back to the free version which has been updated to include some nice features.

Works better for me along with the old reliable Zone Alarm.
