They use to have “gas wars”. One station would knock a penny off their price to get business then the others would counter....lol.

And whatever happened to Howard Johnsons? They used to be as common as Dennys are today, as I remember. The bright orange roof was their trademark.
They couldn't compete on price with Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonald's or Burger King. They couldn't change with the demographics. The Hotels are still around, though they are mostly downscale. A handful of restaurants might be left, I was in one in Connecticut a few years ago.

I also remember even-odd gas rationing under Carter, and waking up my parents one morning to tell them the hostage rescue mission had failed.

Remember the Good Humor truck used to come around the neighborhood? Whatever happened to Good Humor? Mr. Softee was another one who drove around, and served soft ice cream.

Saturday Morning Cartoons, and the excitement we had when the 3-stations announced the new fall line-up of them. Who can forget the Bugs Bunny Rode Runner Hour and the theme song?
To: 11bravo wolfhoundf
I remember a few gas wars when the price would dip below 20 cents a gallon.

I remember when no one wore seat belts - kids would just sit on laps.85% of this thread is before my time, but I remember riding on the arm rest between my parents. I couldn't have been more then 5 (late 70's).

I remember when:
You could get a giant slice of pizza for $1.00. This was around 1988.
Garbage Pail Kids were banned from my elementary school.
Trans-Ams and Camaros were considered "cool" on Long Island.
Manhattan after dark was filled with "scary people."
Every kid wanted to join the army after spending the entire day playing with their GI Joe figures.
Every kid was excited about the new SW film, "REVENGE of the Jedi" coming out "sometime next year."
When cassette walkmans meant you were ahead of the curve.

My mom has some of her “ration” cards from WW2. You could only buy so much gas, sugar...ect and you had to use the cards the gov issued.

Back in the old days, you could just walk right up and get on an airplane. There was no security at all until sometimes in the ‘60s, after many hijackings to Cuba.

Going to Fenway Park in 1967 with the Malden National Little Legue. Sitting in the Right Field Grandstands and driving Tony Conigliaro crazy.

Garbage Pail Kids were banned from my elementary school. LOL!!! We must be about the same age. They were banned from our school, too, because they hurt someone's feelings. {eye roll}

You used to be able to buy your ticket on the plane for the Trump Shuttle from LGA to DC back in the 1980s.

We still have Ice Cream vans that drives through the neighborhood, but now they are driven by Sikhs who don’t know how to smile, say thank you or even have a nice day to the children.
