Getting ready to buy one myself.

Have it narrowed down to this: http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.do?product_id=10714063

Lots of customer reviews.

It’s a matter of viewing distance. A larger screen will show a better and better picture as a) the viewing distance decreases and b) the screen size increases. For a 32”, you really need to be quite close to notice a significant difference in picture quality.

I’ve got 2 Vizios (36” and a 22”) and they are both great. The only thing I’d change is the on-screen display on the 22” is really tiny.

But the picture and features are great!

Make sure its 1080 not 720.

Is that really going to matter on a 32" screen? Also a 1080i will be more expensive than a 720p at the same screen size.

I was at my local Best Buy yesterday and saw a large stack of boxes of rather inexpensive 720p 32" LCD TV's.

Found this info over at slickdeals.net

Sharp 42” LCD 1080p $699 at Big Lots!
http://www.biglots.com/Specials/W...le=f&p=&e=

I just got this ad in the paper. Sale starts tomorrow Dec 20th through Dec 27th. Doesn’t specify which model, not even online, just says 1080p, built in ATSC, 3 HDMI inputs, I don’t think it’s Aquos though. Amazon has a Sharp 42” 1080p 42SB45U (don’t know if it’s the same one) for $931.95. At CC, they have a 32” Sharp 1080p for $899

I have noticed lots of returns on all brands of this technology at Sam’s Club. My guess there would be even more if people were more perceptive about the limitations of current displays.

Definitely...unless I could find a 1080p model on some crazy sale for the same price, I’d go for it.

Newegg.com has a 1080p one for $499 with free shipping, but I don’t know how good it is. I probably wouldn’t even spend the extra $50.

Reading a owners manual for a Vizio set on their website I saw that Vizio has a digital TV tuner built it, no need for an extra HiDef cable box to get the HiDef channels.

By the way, one more thing: should I consider getting an upscaling DVD player? (Given the size and resolution of the VIZIO VO32L, I don't think it'll be worth it to go all the way to Blu-ray player.) Is there a significant difference between upscaled to 720p through HDMI and 480p through component video (which my current DVD player supports)?

Not worth the cost for the 1080. In fact, almost all 32 inch sets are 720s as the viewer cannot tell the difference.

One issue with LCDs 37” and under is it most of them have 8-bit processors, which means that you get some “color banding”. Sharp makes a 10 bit 37” set, don’t know about their smaller sizes.

At 6-8’ feet I can see the difference at 1080p on a 37-40” set, however to me it’s almost imperceptible on a 32” at that distance.

All TVs are usually shipped with brightness set way too high and contrasts off as well, you can usually greatly improve the picture on any of them with careful adjustment.

I would suggest pricing an extended warranty over at squaretrade.com.

Yes, I would recommend an upscaling player. Upscaling is pretty common now, you won’t pay much of a premium over a regular player. You will see some benefit from upscaling, and you’ll also see a benefit from using HDMI versus component video. Remember flat panels are digital displays and an HDMI connection will give you a digital signal all the way from the source to the display, the component connections were analog of course.

BTW, you can get good quality HDMI cables pretty cheaply, you don’t need to spend a lot of money just because it’s HDMI. Here in the U.S. Monoprice.com has reasonably priced cables of all kinds.

I don’t know if they make a 1920 x 1080 pixel 32” or not, but if they do, I’d try to get one of those. It’s also fun to be able to use a flat panel TV as a computer monitor, so I’d make sure it has that capability.
