Milk has been pastaurized for less than 100 years...can raw milk really be that dangerous? There has been plenty of research that shows how pastaurization makes milk harmful to your body. Think about it, doctors and breastfeeding experts stress that you should never heat your breastmilk because it will destroy the nutrients. Why would cow’s milk be so different?

We drink raw milk and are grateful to be able to do so.

No, they haven’t.
But they won’t admit it, or they’ll say they DID tests.
Much as the mentioned CRU global warming studies.
And about as factual too.

Second ... if I decide to purchase and consume raw milk from a local farmer, it's none of Fedzilla's freakin' business.

I agree, but this is a Pennsylvania farmer, and the evidence indicates he's shipping into Maryland. So this is not a "local" transaction, and it also violates the laws of the sovereign state of Maryland, whose own laws prohibit the sale of raw milk.

This article tells WHY they started pasteurizing milk. A lot of those reasons don't apply anymore. At the bottom of page 2, it lists all the GOOD things that pasteurization kills in milk.

It doesn't destroy "nutrients", but it does destroy antibodies which infants need to get from their mothers, due to the immaturity of their own immune systems, and this is the most critical benefit of breastfeeding infants. However, this transmission of antibodies is effective because of the specificity of many antibodies, and the fact the breastfeeding mother and baby are in the same location and exposed to the same array of pathogens. Neither babies nor anyone else benefits from ingesting antibodies produced by a cow in response to the array of pathogens she encounters in the barn and field where she resides. Presumably it would provide some antibodies to pathogens originating in the cow's milk, but this would only be of benefit to someone drinking that cow's milk, and there would be no expectation of antibodies against the many pathogens that can some in contact with milk after it leaves the ocw and her immediate area.

I would hazard to guess that the pasteurized dairy industry is behind this. They have long had a heck of a lot of clout with government at all levels.

They managed to prohibit margarine for years, and for many more years, had it prohibited from being colored butter yellow by the manufacturer, who had to include a packet of dye to mix with it.

Don’t kid yourself to think this is about public health. Unpasteurized milk tastes so much better than the chalky crap that is sold as milk, that it is no contest. So the way around this is to prevent people from ever even tasting raw milk.

They are very wealthy and pay as many taxes as anyone else.

If they pay the same taxes as everyone, how can they still be wealthy?

All kidding aside, the Amish do not pay Social Security as all other American's (save for some government employees who also have an exemption) must do on their income. Furthermore, trade amongst themselves does not incur sales taxes, at least it didn't in Ohio a decade or so ago.

Does anyone want to bet that before obama and the rats are done muslims are going to get the ability to opt out of SS that the Amish got in the 60s? Bet they also get to opt out of having to purchase mandatory health insurance too.

This brings up an interesting question. Does the health care reform act (or what b.s. they called) grant the Amish an exemption from having to purchase mandatory health insurance? What about native American tribes? Bet the later got it and the Amish didn't, does anyone know for sure?

Anyone who has not had raw milk has no clue what real milk can taste like.

Oh and one other point that wasn't clear in my last post. Medicaid and Medicare are part of the Social Security system. The Amish do not pay SS/Medicare/Medicaid taxes. And while they are also not receiving Social Security payments, they are using Medicare and Medicaid.

Thus they are not paying the same taxes, nor carrying the same tax burden as like Americans.

They came in the dark, shining bright flashlights while my family was asleep, keeping me from milking my cows, from my family, from breakfast with my family and from our morning devotions, and alarming my children enough so that they first question they asked my wife was, "Is Daddy going to jail?"

It depends on how clean the farm is.

I am not an extremist or a “GovernmentEliminator” — I’m a GovernmentShrinker. The Constitution says what it says about the federal government’s authority to regulate interstate commerce. I’d object if it was deployed in a way that effectively prevented people from getting it even when their state government had no objection, but this is not such a case. Every single state prohibits the sale of raw milk anywhere except at the farm where it originates (and Michigan even prohibits that). This just isn’t a case of the federal government overreaching.

The issue of whether it’s appropriate for *state* governments to have such tight restrictions on sales of raw milk is a separate issue. Personally, I see no real justification for such restrictions, beyond a labelling requirement re risk and origin. But state laws aren’t the topic of this article/thread.

I’m a resident of Pennsylvania, which has looser laws than most states re raw milk sales. With a permit and on-farm bottling/labelling operation, dairy farmers may sell raw milk to retail stores, and they can sell directly from their own farmer without a bottling/labelling operation, to consumers who bring their own containers. Personally I think this is reasonable, but many states’ laws (especially Michigan, which has the strictest raw milk laws in the nation) don’t strike me as reasonable, and IF I was a resident of one of those states, I would be in opposition to the state laws. But I have no problem at all with federal government agents intervening in the activities of a Pennsylvania farmer who is violating both Pennsylvania’s and Maryland’s state laws via his interstate sales of raw milk.

Aside from the Gestapo tactics, the Feds were within their rights. Selling Buying using raw milk is a dangerous business.A lot of bad diseases including cow pox scarlet Fever etc are the result of drinking using raw milk. I am sorry but I am on the side of the Feds this time, just not their tactics
