President Nixon tried to get the Congress to balance the budget (they managed it once during his time in office); the total national debt eventually exceeded the value of the US reserves, which turned the (since FDR) already-fictional ability of citizens to exchange paper money for specie — an anachronism — into a embarrassment.

This event was perhaps what poured gasoline over the kindling for the nutty conspiracy “theories” about the Trilateral Commission, the Bildebergers, etc, all of which were just warmed-over “Protocols of the Elders of Sion” paranoia.
