The Salton Sea occupies a long, flat basin in the Sonoran Desert southeast of Los Angeles. This body of water has been called the "accidental sea" because it was created inadvertently in 1905, when the Colorado river flooded and broke through temporary gates built to control water flowing into irrigation canala in California's Imperial Valley.
