I use the VGA hook up off my laptop with an audio off the headphone jack to audio in connection on TV. For some reason audio does not come over to the TV using an HDMI cable on some content. It just be my laptop, never figured it out.

My cable “bundle” went up to $170. I dropped it about a month ago and only have internet now. I have my old laptop hooked up to my tv. I got an Amazon Prime trial when I bought my Kindle. I didn’t think their selections were very good and it wasn’t worth the price. I’ve been finding plenty of stuff to watch on Netflix. There’s also a lot of sites with network tv shows, but there’s very little of that I’m interested in. I’m pretty happy with just Netflix. If I run out of stuff to watch there, I’ll point my browser to Hulu.
It did not work for me.
For later....we are in process of doing just this
My friends and I have all been talking about his. I’m the guinea pig and will be doing it first.
I’m tired of paying 80 dollars a month just to watch a few things that I’m interested in.
Great for news. Been streaming fox for a little while now with the TV on Fox. Only difference is a few commercials.
“Does anybody else have just internet TV? Disadvantages? Advantages? Do you generally find everything you want to watch? “..... As far as what you’ve been watching on cable there’s a problem. If you want to keep watching some shows. Such as ‘Walking Dead’ you won’t find it on the internet. Some History channel shows are available the next day like ‘Pawn Stars’ but very few. I put up a roof top antenna and put a TV card in the computer which allows to record to watch later since some shows come on when I’m out but many channels are only on cable or satallite.....
Smart TV with Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Vudu is all the TV you will ever watch.
Just bought a bluray player with wifi from radio Shack for $114 and it has component hook ups so I dont have to upgrade my big TV to HDMI or get a converter.
The best part?
NO COMMERCIALS ! ! !
(I mean if you really want to watch them Hulu has them all, but, WTF??)
I am not depressed anymore, my credit score is doing just fine, Obama doesn't interupt my lesure time and my 4 hour errections are no longer a problem.
DO IT and figure it out while you go. You will be saving money from day 1.
Well Hulu has alot of programming you might like. As for the NFL the nfl website has something they call Game Rewind where you can watch the games on demand beginning on tuesday after the weekend/monday night games are over. It costs $40 for the season. Its only for the season so when the regular season ends its done. You have to pay extra for the playoffs.
Sounds better than 200 for the NFL regular season on directv.
I travel 50% of the time so I watch most of my tv off of dvr.
Roku is outstanding. I was quite miffed when I bought one and a few months later they declared that Netflix subtitles would only be available for the new Roku 2s, but I’m still going to upgrade to a Roku 2. I need the subtitles.
My cable bill went down about $50 a month. I have Netflix for $7.99. At some point, I will add Amazon Prime. Since we desperately miss many Food Network shows, I get those from my parents’ TIVO. We use library DVDs, too.
bump
I forgot to mention the top Roku models have a USB port. That’s how I can record from my parents’ Tivo when desired. I do have to convert the shows a couple times to get them to the correct format, but then I just stick them on a jump drive and have 10+ hours to watch.
I am on a month without satellite. I have a WD TV Live Hub with 1 TB storage, an Apple TV and both smart TV and 3D BD smart player. The Apple TV with Netflix and MLBtv is almost all I need. I also like the Radio stations on the Apple TV. The only thing I wish I had was The Blaze TV through one of my devices ( it is on Roku), and Amazon would be nice to at least AirPlay.. I don’t like tying up my phone or iPad to have it on. I do not miss anything from the satellite.
I do still have basic cable channels because it is essentially free from my ISP. I only have flipped it over there for any weather news. You won’t regret it, I know I don’t.
Bookmarked for later, when i can get rid of DirecTV.
Thanks for starting the thread. It’ll probably help a lot of people save money with minimal sacrifice, if any.
Does anyone remember that cable was originally advert5ised as COMMERCIAL FREE TV?
Step 1: Over the Air Antenna for network sports. If you have a nice TV you should notice a significant improvement in picture quality with OTA. Cable and Sat both step on their signals.
Step 2. Get a set top box: My company creates solutions for set top boxes like Roku, Boxee, etc, Roku CURRENTLY provides the best combination of price, content and usability. The XS (top of the line) box comes with an RF remote and can even be mounted on the back of a TV. If you don’t have wireless set up in your house the XS is the only one with an Ethernet port. I have mine in a closet running through an HDMI switching receiver. Apple TV would be a game changer if it was an open platform like i0S on the iPhone and iPad. I think this will happen eventually but I think Apple is trying to secure the adequate content rights to be the category killer when it launches and some think they will tie this to a launch an actual TV set. HULU and Amazon Prime are great subscriptions. I have all these boxes in my house, but I use the Roku the mostl. I use the Apple TV as more of a media/music server for all macs and pc’s in the house,
