I would also rather it be full winter than fall here in Michigan if I were stranded in the wilderness. I can fish on, cross, or be very visible a fully frozen lake. Rain just makes you wet, snow can insulate.
As far as familiarity is concerned I also know that things like wild grapes are very common here and they’re everywhere. They’re dried up and frozen in the winters but you can still get nutritional value out of them. The rose hips will still be on the wild roses as well.
Personally, even when day hiking, I always have 3 methods for making fire in my pack. I would say most casual hikers and folks who get in trouble, don’t carry anything to make fire and don’t have anything to boil water in. A shelter doesn’t have to be much - I always carry a couple of 39 gallon trash bags & a silver survival blanket and with those items, I can make a quick shelter to stay dry/out of any rain & hopefully, avoid hypothermia. Most folks can hunker in a makeshift shelter and make it a night or two & hopefully, they’ll be found. Again, it all depends on where you are, the weather, and how provisioned you are.
I was thinking survival, like fell out of a plane, or Naked and Afraid,..
One tool...(always take the machete), and stranded.
Hiking, crap, you can always flick your bic,
Do you watch Naked and Afraid? You’d like it.
I do watch it. I like Les Stroud, too (Survivorman).
Played with a BioLite stove last weekend. Takes almost NO fuel, doesn’t smoke and can boil a pot of water in less than 2 minutes.
BioLite burns hot, clean and super efficient. And is compact and feather weight. Great if you are camped in one spot, but if your whole life is reduced to one bag, you best commit the space to jerked meat or nuts. Or 2 bricks of 22lr.
Thanks!
You’re welcome.
That part of the Great Basin is very sparse on burnable material.
Takes a lot of effort to round up wood for fires in the high desert.
The nitwit father was lucky...things could have easily gone bad
and one or more of the kids die. No Nevada is VERY harsh country
and very tough to survive in even if one is skilled and prepared.
