Right, but those are their scripts, not yours.

Kirkwood correctly stated that FR uses JavaScript. You challenged him to prove it. It is an easy proof.

YOU cannot post scripts to play video or do other obnoxious things, as the OP requested.

Correct, as I pointed out earlier, in #26.

I also said in post 38: Sorry about exposing you, but everyone who has allowed HTML input to their site knows to block scripting.

Kirkwood never proved he could input scripting. Because he can't.

Where did he claim that he could use JavaScript in posts?

He only pointed out that FR uses JavaScript, which is true.

Well, Posting Video (HTML Command Vanity) was the subject of the thread. Sorry if you're confused.

Well, Posting Video (HTML Command Vanity) was the subject of the thread. Sorry if you're confused.

You don't need to write JavaScript to embed a video.

All you need is the <video> tag, if you've got a link to a .mp4 or .ogg or other suitable content hosted somewhere.

If the video is hosted on YouTube, it's even simpler. You just need to post an IFrame, like so:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rZ823w6Ez4E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen>
</iframe>

and YouTube will take it from there and fill your 560x315 embedded frame with the video, without you having to write a single JavaScript statement.

Neither of those methods need JavaScript. The reason they don't work in FR posts is that FR strips out <video> and <iframe> tags, not that it also strips out embedded scripts, which it does.

IOW, JavaScript is irrelevant to posting videos.

Sorry, your code doesn’t play video in my browser, just a black rectangle.

You can see my YouTube example work live here.

To see the source code, right-click on the Result frame (where the purty pic is) and select View Frame Source.

Sorry, your code doesn’t play video in my browser, just a black rectangle.

You probably have JavaScript turned off altogether in your browser.

You could try putting the following full HTML page in a file (or uploading to your own server, if you have one handy) and navigating to it:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
<head>
<title>Embedding a YouTube Video</title>
</head>
<body>
    <iframe width="560"
               height="315"
               src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/rZ823w6Ez4E"
               frameborder="0"
               allowfullscreen="">
    </iframe>
</body>
</html>

When I do that, the video plays just fine if JavaScript is enabled in the browser, but not otherwise. This implies that there are JavaScript dependencies in the YouTube link (not surprising — they'll learn if their videos don't work, LOL).

But note that there is no JavaScript in the page itself. So, if JavaScript is enabled in your browser, and you were able to upload that IFrame statement into an FR post, even with FR stripping out scripts, it should nevertheless play. It comes down to the fact that FR automatically strips IFrames without further scrutiny.

FreeRepublic is the last and possibly only website that is user friendly to us, dial-up users. Yes, we still do exist.

Try a text-based browser like lynx; they strip out images.

Really fast on dialup lines. Works fine on fast cable connecttions as well. You just don't get multiple tabs, going "back" is done with left arrow, you change focus from link to link on a page by using tab and/or up/down arrow, etc. And when you click on a link to an article on another site, with all it's images... wham ! just the text is downloaded, superfast, without any images. Read it, left arrow back to FR.

Of course, you would want to take note of the options you can pass lynx on the commandline.

For those running Mozilla, a nice add-on I use is Thumbnail Zoom Plus. It pops up full-size pics from thumbnail image links and also does it for text YouTube links as well, it won't play the vid per se, but lets you be able to say 'saw it' and avoid reruns, etc...
