The chip doesn’t become slow; newer software (including updates) tends to demand greater resources so over time the machine will slow down because it’s working harder.

“I’m not much in to computers either but how can a RAM memory chip become slow? I remember my brother telling me to sometimes remove and reinsert my drive and memory chips (I have a laptop) in order to clean the contacts.”

RAM memory does not become slow. Re-seating memory and drive cables is rarely necessary unless your computer crashes or displays error messages.

I have observed that Windows computers often slow down because of an accumulation of browser cache files and Windows temporary files. Once you have more than a few thousand files stored in a folder, any attempted access of files in that folder by you or the operating system really bogs the computer down. Clean out those cache and temp files, and defragment your hard drive — you should see some speed improvement. Scan your computer for malware and viruses. Another cause of slowdown is increasingly bloated software programs. Install the maximum amount of RAM that your computer will allow.

I usually clean out my pc with disk cleanup then run defragment at least once a week. I run a spyware program each evening when I shut down. One thing though, I keep getting this adware.cookie something every time. Do you know how to stop it?

Yeah, that is expensive. Not all computers cost near so much to upgrade. SkyDancer mentioned his computer having 2GB of RAM. If it isn’t already maxed out, maybe it could be upgraded to 4MB; that would not cost much. Always consult the manual for specs. I buy RAM on eBay for much than the retail prices you would have to pay at the retail stores.

Possibly. Go to http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm and download a plain-text file known as a “hosts file”. Then copy it to the appropriate folder for your version of operating system. Instructions on the site tell how to do it. That file simply acts as a filter to block thousands of the best known malware sites. Check that site for updates once a month. After that, install and run MalwareBytes if you aren’t using it already.

My mother bought a Compaq from eBay a long time ago, and it was a terrible idea. I didn’t work right when we got it. I won’t trust PC components from eBay. I prefer to buy from Microcenter, because they’re actually an enthusiast’s place, and I can buy a 2-year warranty for parts, which is what I did for my mobo, AMD APU, and SSD.

All in all, cost me around $600. Gaming capable on low settings as well. I’ll be using it for years.

I have bought lots of computer gear on eBay and, knock on wood, I’ve never had a problem. I have used MicroCenter for years, mainly when I’m in hurry to get something fast.

I didn’t use her much at all. I just liked to purchase oil, and turn the volume up when she said “I love you” in that Marilyn voice.

Drove the gf crazy.

Unfortunately, our Enterprise system chose to use Flex for one of our apps.

Check out http://hexgl.bkcore.com/

It is a 100% HTML5 game.

There are many out there which are much better than even this.

it takes forever for the video to load...with the exception of Youtube......

Youtube is now using HTML5 for all new content and all but the oldest videos.

It really is much easier than it seems. Click on link below for direct access to the text file. Save it anywhere on your hard drive.

http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.txt

All that remains is to copy it to the appropriate folder, depending on your version of Windows (or Mac). As soon as the file is copied to that folder, the operating system automatically blocks access to those websites listed in the file, no matter which browser you have. There is nothing else to configure. I have used this technique for years and highly recommend it.
