With Twilight fanfiction that went to publish, all names were changed which got those authors free from legal entanglements over copyright infringement.

Wow, I am watching it now. I had NO idea there were fan films out there and the quality of them.
I may be binge watching for the next few weeks (in the evenings).
Looks like a straight up copyright infringement. Pity, because the preview takes people like me back to what made us love the original series. The “suits” at NBC never understood Star Trek and killed the original series as soon as they could. The fans forced it to be brought back and have remained loyal through a cascade of increasingly PC milquetoast and CG-effect-heavy prequels and sequels. This looked like it had promise and it would behoove Paramount and CBS to finance these people and stand back. They’d make a ton of money off the passion of the people at Axanar. But Hollywood suits, of whatever generation, have never been known for humility, common sense, and intelligence.

Yes, that’s the one. It’s like they shot it right there at the old Desilu studios. It’s obviously a real labor of love and has a lot of heart. The polar opposite to Star Wars fanboi Abrams’ fiasco, a cold and soulless abortion.
I have to say, extremely impressed with their prelude movie. They got quality actors, many who have been in the frachise movies and tv series. This is not run of the mill amateur fan fiction. This could be a movie that could make real money.
Very impressive. I was unaware of these films. Star trek movies are usually very disappointing.
You have to hand it to George Lucas. So many spoofs and home made remakes have been made of Star Wars and he never sued anyone. There was also a fan made “Predator” installment where a Teutonic knight hunts the Predator. Way better than the crappy Hollywood sequels.
They are really good.
George commoditized it by making the Fan Film Awards, thus generating traffic to the website, and generating money. Also George remained a very approachable presence, a lot of SW fan films actually sought and got permission. And he’s sued a few folks who over stepped some lines.
Pay Paramount some money.
Wasn’t there a James Bond movie that was made independently of the people who hold the film rights (the heirs of Cubby Broccoli and Harry Saltzman)? I believe they even got Connery to star in it.

Seems Paramount is going about this in a crappy way as all indications are the Axanar production staff had meetings with Paramount. I’d argue that since they were well aware of it for over a year and that produced material had already been put out (the 20 minute “documentary”), Paramount already surrendered their trademark rights in this particular case.
The only reason they’re doing it is that the production quality is Hollywood level and the fundraisers have hit a million dollars. It sucks too because the 20 minute “documentary” they put out last year was better than the last several Trek movies.
Yes, but film rights for Thunderball were legally awarded to Kevin McClory.
He later pushed the envelope and claimed the rights to the SPECTRE characters entirely.
This caused “The Spy Who Loved Me” to change the name of the villain from Ernst Blofeld to Karl Stromberg.
Years later, McClory attempted yet another remake...he tried to get Timothy Dalton to play Bond after he had been pushed out for Pierce Brosnan.
McClory - his family I think - sold the rights back to Broccoli - hence the new movies “Casino Royale,” “Spectre,” etc.
Just watched this. My first thought was, ‘Hell yeah! Gary Graham!’. My second thought was, wow, this is well made. It would definitely benefit both parties to come to some kind of agreement. Be interested to see how this pans out.
Yes, you could tell he thought of and treated it like it was just another movie for him to direct. He didn’t put anything into it. Talk about blowing a shot at creating something great for the ST legacy...
No argument here. I thought it was a gigantic F-U to the fans. Even if these weren’t Trek movies, just as sci-fi they were crap. From poor casting, stupid dialogue and plot holes you could fly the Death Star through (yeah, and that lens flare thing, too). Blowing up Vulcan with a garbage scow ? Whut ?
Give me a Star Wars film to direct, and I’ll blow up Coruscant with a funnel and a grain of Uncle Ben’s Wild Rice. Ah, revenge.
Huge fan, I donated on kickstarter for this film. The production team isn’t doing what a hundred other Star Trek fan films over the past 30 years have done yet they’re getting sued?
All I can think is that this film had some serious Hollywood actors behind it. But legally how does that matter?
