I swam the crossing in the summer of 1980. The currents are rolling like a blender and move about three to five mph.

Wow! I did not know that. Thanks for the history.

Franklin was a genius.

It’s up to people like you and me to retell these stories, now that George Washington University (of all places) has eliminated its American History requirement for history majors! Good Grief!

Can you email photos to someone who does know how to post them? (Not me, since they changed the protocol.)

Seriously! American History is no longer required to get a history degree at Geo. Washington University. The requirement was eliminated in order to “free up” space for other electives, or avenues of interest.

I’m curious as to what is required at other universities. When I was at UC Berkeley (in the dark ages) American History was required for all liberal arts majors (not sure about engineering because my husband took that course at Northwestern). If you were not a history major, you were not required to actually take the course, but could fulfill the requirement by testing out. I know people who tried to do that and ended up with no degree because the test was quite demanding.

It is disgusting what has happened to higher education in this country.

Thank you for the ping.

Washington Crossing State Park hosts a re-enactment of the Crossing every year on Christmas. We attended one year.

On Christmas, beginning at noon, they will be live casting on Youtube:

Wonderful. If you would not mind, could you please ping me to your photos.

We attended this a few years back. Quite worthwhile. That day, though, they did not actually cross, as the river was treacherous. It was treacherous, too, when Washington crossed, but he wasn’t worried about lawsuits.

I know that you already know what I posted in #28. I was just posting it for the others.

Thanks for that link - I’ll try to get the kids to watch it.

Last summer we went to NYC and talked about Washington’s miraculous escape. Then saw the crossing. (”Hmm kids, I wonder why George didn’t just use that bridge downstream a few hundred yards!”)

Then Philly - and thought about how that must have been a distant dream as they were going across the Delaware. Then D.C. - and the huge monstrosity the Government had become.

“Kids - I wonder if the Founding Fathers - with the entire government supported by a few buildings in Philly, ever imagined that it would take a four-story building, one block square, to house the Department of Agriculture?”

Did you watch? If so, I am sorry there were so many technical challenges. I am assuming this is the first year that they have livecast this, so perhaps they need to work out the bugs.

Merry Christmas.
