I agree that one’s life is one’s own.
Many Christians believe otherwise, though — that our lives belong to the Lord, and it’s sinful to end them before His set time. Though I disagree with that, I respect their stance.
And either way, your tax dollars get spent on the cleanup when someone takes the long dive. I don’t know how much — but it’s definitely non-trivial.
This being liberal California, maybe they should set up a little booth on the bridge: you’re only allowed to suicide if you can pay cash equivalent to the cost of cleaning up your demise.
I don’t know if that’s what they think. If they do, they are deluded. My sister committed suicide three years ago on April 22, 2014. I don’t know if anything could have stopped her.
Couldn’t jumpers, after having jumped in the net, just jump off the net to their death below?
So now it’s a 2-step process. I really don’t see how it changes things. Plus, you may get “jumpers” doing it just for the thrill (I suppose they’ll be fined to help the budget deficit there).
Or, just drain the bay, fill it with foam and lower the bridge. Much more sensible...
I vote for a trampoline!
Have the animal rights people filed to block this, the way they have with The Wall? What about the endangered species that will get tangled in the net?
The net will not prevent suicide — it will prevent the body to reach the water’s surface.
Suicides would plummet...
There was a 6 foot mesh fence on top of the railing in January, 1974.
Another liberal boondoggle. $193 million for a fence that you can jump down to and then climb off and over. Does Nancy Pelosi have a financial interest in this fence company?
Can’t SF/Sacramento just pass a law to make it illegal to jump off the GGB with the intention of suicide without a [costly] permit?
Yep, an not just San Franciscans. People will come from all over the world to video themselves jumping into the net to post on social media.
Well, it has been said more than once that I am the last to realize the joke. :)
“Catch and Release” LOL.
Just another waste of taxpayer funds ... if they want to kill themselves they will find a way. At least if they jump off the bridge there is less chance that they will take someone else along with them.
First, they're counting on a psychological effect. A lot of people don't really want to commit suicide and would be deterred by the barrier.
Second, you could break a bone or hurt yourself jumping on the the barrier and that could make in more difficult to get over the edge.
In both cases -- psychological and physical -- the barrier creates a pause that could be used by rescue personnel to talk the person down or pull them back.
Sign in sheet was just brilliant...
There is going to be a lot of hungry sharks now. Poor fishies.
Pelosi and Feinstein should jump in the Bay as part of quality control. Perhaps there is an unseen mechanical flaw that could be brought to light
