Care to post the article/section of the Constitution that outlaws secession? Go ahead and post it now.

Had the nation been split into four pieces you would be speaking German or Russian.

That is BS. I may hate Northers but I don't think they would have sided with the Germans or the Russians. Maybe I am wrong about that but they aren't that f-ed up.

If he ever had a big heart, it was probably impaled on a spike for his enemies to see.

The Russians had infiltrated the government. It would not have been difficult to use that to their advantage. Only because the ENTIRE economy of the entire nation was available was WWII won.

If you believe rump nations would not have been the target of foreign interference I don’t know what to say. That was Washington’s fear and he is as correct now as he was then.

Ok, let me get this straight. If the South and the North had been separate countries one or both would have stayed out of WWII? What have you been smoking?

The only problem is that Jackson stopping any secession would have delayed the freeing of the slaves.

...and maybe prevented the violent death of over 600,000 Americans in that war, and lots of people of color afterwords..

Note: Both governments called themselves "Americans", and so it was true.

If you read some of Jefferson Davis' writings while he was a US Senator from Mississippi, you would see that slavery would have ended with the power of Agrarian Elitists in the South being broken by industrialisation.

In reality, the war was actually a Northern aristocracy against a Southern aristocracy with slavery as the stated reason.

The troops in the field never thought about such things. This is why the "lost causers" still have an audience today. It is true that there was a disconnect between the people who manipulated the war, and the men who fought it.

...What we have now is not working and getting worse.

One might have said this at any point in our country's history. Dissolution, especially at this late date, would be the Apocalypse. China rules the world! This means you!

You could have seen the Civil War coming during the drafting of the Declaration.

Trump’s best defense is that what he said is true.

If they ask about freeing the slaves in a timely manner, of course if it were up to him, they would have been freed and integrated much more smoothly.

>I’m a Lincoln fan and an FDR during WWII fan, but it takes a lot of historical courage to recognize the “failures” of presidents who America came to worship. The Civil War was a catastrophe not Lincoln’s fault but not a good thing even with ending slavery.

Most of the horrors of the civil war where Lincolns fault for being such an incompetent commander in chief. His strategic political moves were quite brilliant but he called far to many shots in the field and it cost hundred of thousands of lives.

LOL, it’s funny to see folks try to defend such a statement. BTW wasn’t Jackson considered one of the fathers of the Democrat party? I wish he would stay away from goofy statements.

'I'm trying to prevent another civil war, and 30 years from now when there is likely one underway anyway, people will reflect on this statement.'

That's some 4-dimensional chess. #winning

Isn’t it refreshing that we have a man in the WH from whom we actually learn something when he speaks.

Obama, and a Hillary, would have spent five days, with countless advisors before they would ever say anything about a former president, our history or ourselves.

WE learn from this man. He’s taught me much already on the art of negotiating. FOLKS, it works.

"At this point I would rather break up the Union into 4 manageable parts that are ideologically more homogeneous.. What we have now is not working and getting worse."

California secession would cure about 3/4s of the problem...

You are going to have a heck of a time drawing those borders. The ideological divide only looks regional. Most of the hard left support comes from inner cities, even suburbs tend to be conservative. The left consists of dozens of little islands that are concentrations of decay, poverty, and decadence, populated by the very rich and those in abject poverty, except for the monthly government check.

Take away the inner cities and this nation would look very much like Texas politically. And we would never miss them — the inner cities are largely populated by parasites, some of them get a welfare check, others put on a suit and mismanage large corporations.

I know human nature. The socialists will move to a socialist country and the people that want liberty will move to where they can find it. For example if the North east broke off and formed a new country it would be a magnet for liberals/socialists from all over the rest of the country. Same with California. The population is not set in stone. The problem is we cannot divide ourselves properly because IT IS one big country.

Instead of talking about it, he needs to doing it...especially vetoing this budget until it has the wall, defunding PP and repealing OC in it.

IF he signs it, I suspect he’ll be finished as a strong leader. He needs to make the UniParty bastards override his veto for all the People to see who the traitors are.

lol Veto and override would finish his Presidency for good. It would be all out war of the Judicial branch in arms with Congress to stop President Trump. We have a fragile balance right now and reality has to always be kept in mind. Direction is more important than detail.

Feel good does not always translate into policy. Principle rarely translates into politics. Reality is always present. If Trump's popularity was in the 60's or something, it might be worth a gamble, but a veto right now would be foolish.

The thing that is wrong with that statement is that had Charleston not fired on Sumter and the southern states had not exercised their right to secede, slavery would have continued on indefinitely.
