A phobia is an irrational fear used in the names of mental disorders that have the general sense “dread of, aversion toward” that specified by the initial element. In this case it a a rational fear that parents should have for their children to develop the mental illness called gender dysphoria. The cost for gender reassignment can be upwards of 50,000 for boys and 100,000 for girls. That’s a good college education. Besides, gender reassignment is a tricky procedure that has a good chance of failure. You don’t want to pay for all that work to be done and find out you have been rendered into a sexless eunuch.

I would love to see the American Airlines CEO make a statement like the following (alas, it will never happen):

"We don't know what Lena Dunham may or may not have overheard, understood, or misunderstood from the private conversation of two people who may or may not have been American Airlines employees. However, we are not in the business of policing the private beliefs and conversations of our employees. Thus, the only relevant aspect of this incident is to note that Lena Dunham believes she should try to pressure companies to monitor and control the private beliefs and conversations of their employees. This is not something we do or would ever consider doing. Thank you."
