It was so boring. I could not wait for it to end. A good movie is hacksaw ridge.
We saw it. I found it interesting, but disorienting. The action switched among three stories, and one of the stories was at night. So the scenes switched from day to night and back to day. The stories were interesting and it showed that the effort to evacuate the troops from the beach was unforgiving. Riveting, but no continuity. That being said, I did think the scenes were enlightening.
Just saw it today. Film didn’t really have much of a plot at all. Just one action scene after another. I much prfer Saving Private Ryan to Dunkirk. That was a WW2 movie. Dunkirk is an art movie masquerading as a WW2 story, IMO.
Depending on your depth of knowledge on Dunkirk itself I would suggest listening to the ‘stuff you missed in history’ podcast on the subject it will serve as a good primer for the movie.
I think one of the boats is actually currently used on the Thames for cruises. I would have to look up which one though.
My dad loved Combat and Hogan’s Heros. Go figure.
Good flick, not great. I am glad I saw it in the theater instead of waiting for the home vid.
I would read up on Dunkirk, Wikipedia is a good start. It was a truly desperate situation which turned into a miracle.
I am going to go see it again, it is that good.
If you want a good war movie, I highly recommend the Russian movie “Brest Fortress”. Probably the best war movie I’ve ever seen.

I found it so so... the reality is Dunkirk was a massive undertaking and I found the movie just felt small compared to the reality of the real Dunkirk
you see me half dozen aircraft four or five ships three to four thousand men it just felt tight small and on a budget
when they pan back and you see Big Empty beaches ...not beaches crowded with men on into infinity (we’re talking four hundred thousand men plus men on that Beach + Equipment)
seeing modern buildings in some of the shots in the background...
it’s not up to the standards of a Saving Private Ryan or a Band of Brothers letb alone at Tora Tora Tora or the Longest Day that always gave the scale of the a fuel for the scale of the undertaking and also a fuel for being in the proper time frame
a grand historical event really does need kind of a grand sweeping movie ....dunkirk’s the movie is not it... it felt cheap

It was basically like “Enemy at the Gates”. You weren’t going to learn everything there was to know about the Battle of Stalingrad based on it, it was just about one small piece of it, the Sniper duel.

Well the old guy that was THERE disagreed with you. He thought it was right on target.
I just saw the movie this morning.
I was disappointed that the movie wasn’t about the Battle of Dunkirk in 1658, which was, arguably, a more important battle than the later one portrayed here.
However, I thought several scenes were quite exciting and realistic. such as the air combat scenes, the scenes in which ships were sunk, and especially the bombing raids on the soldiers on the beach who had no place to take cover. At the time of the battle, the German Junkers Ju-87 dive bomber was already obsolete due to its lack of speed and maneuverability, but it certainly looked formidable from the point of view of a foot soldier sitting in its path.
However, there was almost no character development, and the scenes involving the shipwrecked soldier who accidentally killed the English teenager was downright hokey.
I also noticed that they made almost no mention of the enemy. The word “Nazi” was never spoken, and the only time I remember hearing the word “German” was when some British soldiers accused a French solder of being a German spy. I also couldn’t see any Nazi hooked crosses on the tails of the German planes, although these were usually shown in the distance and too far away to view them in detail—and there wasn’t a hooked cross anywhere in the film.
But one thing I certainly liked about the movie was that it was devoid of sex scenes and nude scenes, and I don’t believe I heard any profanity, although I didn’t understand all of the words, given the English brogue in which everyone spoke.
Silly romantic sub-plots almost ruined Midway (1976), which was otherwise much better than Pearl Harbor,
“Tora, Tora, Tora” IS Pearl Harbor.
