Indeed though, elsewhere it is made clear we are saved by Grace alone.
To reconcile this doctrine with Mathew 25, my own thought is that when we accept what Jesus did for us and the forgiveness and grace that comes with it, we are inspired to do good in His name out of gratitude. Although it is not our own good works that actually save us, rather it is the fruit of that salvation...and always present in those that really accept God's forgiveness and repent.
I really don't see anywhere that salvation itself depends on understanding prophecy...although I do think understanding prophecy a good thing. But God has different roles for us. If you are called to study prophecy more, great. I don't think its my calling, but neither am I totally adverse to picking things up as a layman. What calling I have is in other areas.
