“dad’s German Shepherd”

No matter how bad ass, it would not stand a chance against an average pit bull. Not even close.

This no-verification-allowed nonsense is just another example of the atrocious Americans With Disabilities Act. Congress wrote it in such vague terms that it became a lawyers’ employment special immediately. Congressmen and Senators don’t want to be held responsible for anything. They could have written a law that protected people with real disabilities and limited scammers ... in many areas. If it hadn’t covered enough people, it could have been amended. Instead it put many small businesses out of business and led to nonsense like this pit bull dishonesty. Congress has only gotten worse since then.

"..The police said there was nothing they can do... a fact that infuriates me beyond words.."

Damn a vicious dog. That strikes a special chord with me. I got bit in the ear when I was a little kid. Got zero tolerance for them and don't care to hear BS dog owner stories.

I keep my dog in my pocket. He barks here, bites over there.

A very good friend has a new "rescue" dog (Weimeraner). It bit my fiance (puncture wounds to thigh)completely unprovoked when she was over at his house by invitation discussing some business.
That's once.
Now we don't go over there anymore so there's not a "problem". d:^|

This service dog crap turned out the same way the disability license plates did.

In the beginning, the programs served those who really needed them - blind or wheelchair bound.

But now, everyone is gaining access to these services.

I don't care how bad your knees or hips are. Not in a wheelchair? Park with everyone else.

Scared to be around strangers? Leave your dog at home and stay with it, or man up and face the public.

Wow, you guys are tough. I dared to suggest that animals, even real, trained, legit, certified service animals shouldn’t be on planes unless in a comfortable cage in the hold and still can’t sit down.

The bleeding heart FReeper crowd scorched my backside with all the flaming.

It didn’t change my opinion though. I was discussing this with a co-worker today and she told me she was on a flight where a blind guy was trying to share his seat with his leader dog. It was very unfair to the dog. I mean, it’s not like the dog is going to find his seat number for him. In reality the dog can do nothing for him for the several hours of the flight.

That said, abuse of service animal credentials is rampant. You need to pet something to feel good, get a teddy bear when you’re in public. I get that a pet may make you comfortable, but life ain’t always comfortable.

While in regards to the scammer types I agree, you should consider veteran PTSD cases as valid as well. Often times that service animal a veteran has is the only thing that keeps his sanity.

Years ago, I was working doing some repairs on a house in the Detroit Ghetto. The residents were several generations of welfare rats and a drug dealer son. The drug dealer owned a pit bull that he left at home.

He was gone all day. The pit bull got up, walked downstairs and out the back door, ate the legs off a dog walking through the back yard, then went back upstairs and went to sleep. The matriarch welfare rat got all freaked out that the dog was going to eat the small welfare rats in training who were just toddlers. (Sorry, multiple generations living on the taxpayers dollar get my goat)

I offered to use the drug dealers gun that he had left in his room to dispatch the dog, which we proceeded to do.

Bummer.

Al dogs can be wonderful pets; that being said, there should be some requirements for those having Presa Canarios and the like.

Yes maddening!

I was just bitten by a pit bull about ten days ago while walking down our town’s prairie path.

So, yes, muzzles on aggressive breeds (when not well trained) in public places. My doctor (I had to get a shot and prescription) said it’s not the dog’s fault; it’s the owner’s fault, but I don’t understand why anyone would want a dog that bites people when not provoked in the first place.

Thank for for making this important point.

a pet peeve of mine is all theses pets that are being called service animals. I truly believe that service animals are necessary for a portion of the population but like the handicap parking we have a growing population that are claiming animals with no training are service animals.

I would love to see a requirement of certification for a service dogs and the ability of establishments to request documentation. at this point in the state of California a restaurant or hotel has to except the persons word that a animal is a service animal.
I had an aunt who participated in the raising of seeing eye dogs and later in life had a service dog that was trained to walk at her side to hold her steady and pick up objects for her. it takes a lot of effort to train service dogs and not every animal makes it through the training. the idea that someone can take a pet dog and say that it has been trained makes it harder for those that have service dogs.

I actually do suffer anxiety. My doctor told me he can see the difference if I have been with my dog (a teddy bear). That said, I would not take advantage. Yes, I have a letter. I can take him with me to the dentist(they would let him even without a letter). I could take him on a plane but probably would not. My doctor is concerned because my anxiety can elevate my BP, which we are trying hard to control.
I consider myself in the middle between the statuses so I choose to not use the letter, if at all possible. Oh, and my doctor is not a “shopped” doctor. Been seeing him for about 7 or 8 years.
