Yep. It was The Graduate. I texted one of my friends that I had mentioned and he confirmed the name.

Yah, well, your description didn’t fit many other options
in a small college town in those days. There were other
Graduates in places like Chico, Sacramento, and Davis.
In the SLO Grad I once saw a 16 oz glass beer mug break
over a biker’s nose. It was thrown from about four feet
away. Bloody mess.
