So a piece of jewelry that shows a black man decked out in extravagant royal finery is racist?

Only when a white person is wearing it.

In my kitchen, I have a collection of several glass figurines. They are of human shape and are also functional. I have a cookie jar, salt and pepper shakers, sugar bowl, butter dish, and several others. They have the likeness of fat negro ladies dressed in old timey red and white dresses and scarves on their heads. Some of them are green and white.

I call it my plantation and the fine ladies I call my "mammies." In the midst of my plantation, I have a framed picture of a drawing of a little negro boy in overalls with no shoes, running. The caption reads, "I'se a comin' mammy.I'se a comin"

Is that racist?

I suspect she thought it was a good idea, but she was wrong. I imagine she thought she was wearing a 20,000 dollar Cartier brooch of a black princess to honor the new black princess. She was wrong.

It might be an heirloom, but, whatever.

When The Arabic word for “black” is almost identical to the word for “slave”, and human trafficking is the norm in certain islamic countries, I am not going to waste my indignation over a piece of jewelry.

Years ago, I committed a similar faux pas, appearing as a Confederate general in a beautifully detailed hand made costume, at an office Halloween party.

Believe me, the opprobrium was WAY out of proportion to my offense.

I suffered for MONTHS after that.

I used to collect old Christmas postcards. One I found said: “Do I wish you a Merry Christmas?” and below that was another caption that said: “Do a nigger love watermelon?” along with a drawing of a black man eating watermelon. I have no idea what year it was printed, or where it was printed. And for the life of me, I can’t remember what happened to it.

It’s only a “faux pas” for any who care to wear their feelings on their sleeve, IMO. You sure you wouldn’t be more comfortable over on DU?

As others have said in comments here, her response should have been “sorry, not sorry”, especially since both she and the future “royal” are of common birth, not having pretense to stand on. Also, since Ms. Markle likely claims to be “black”, she’s the larger “racist” in this exchange since she’s agreeing with the old “one drop rule” used by the Kluxers since they began.

Ifs she did that, Liz would cut her off of the Dole and she would lose her Royal perks and I’m sure that Welfare Queen knows better than to offend the hand the feeds her.

I have quite a collection of black folk-art, New Orleans historical ‘mammy’s’ and wooden ‘pickaninnys’, adults and children. They are charming and historical. I have black relatives. When visiting my home they have never said a word. If they are offended by what I consider art the offense ends when they go out my door.I can think of LOTS of current black cultural items that offend me.

Well, I guess I’m among those you classify as “dolts” since I regularly post my opinion that the US would have been better off to have picked our own cotton rather than being encumbered with the slavery problem and its historic impact through current times.

Hey, a black relative GAVE me the Mammy cooky jar I’ve been wanting! She’s on my kitchen table every day- except at Christmas when it’s my alligator Santa.

“I can think of LOTS of current black cultural items that offend me.”

So, you understand how a cultural item may offend someone?

Yes, but do you go to a foreign country and tell its citizens to go back to the colonies?
