Amazing. Republicans assume felons vote Democrat. And Democrats assume felons vote Democrat. And, in the absence of voter ID, you can guarantee they will be voted Democrat. I’d say that’s a lead pipe cinch.

Similarly, every election cycle Democrats go into court to get military votes thrown out on one pretext or other because they assume military votes lean Republican.

So, that’s what we see. They will go to court to get felons registered to vote. And they will go to court to keep military votes out.

> Isn’t it Constitutional?? <

It sure is. The 14th Amendment says that that a state can deny a person the right to vote for “participation in rebellion, or other crime”. So it’s up to each individual state.

I know mine is probably a minority opinion, but we are either free or we are not.

If a person is incarcerated, is on probation, or on parole, then no, they shouldn't enjoy all the same rights as free people do. However, if you've paid your state-mandated penalty, and are no longer incarcerated, on probation, or on parole, then you should have all rights restored.

Yes, even the right to own a firearm.

If a person is too dangerous to society to own a firearm, then they are too dangerous to release back into society.

Apparently the NY Times thinks that if it were not for Klansmen driving urban residents to convenience stores or beaming ads for narcotics into the young angelic skulls full of mush there would be no holdups or murders and therefore no convictions.

Yep.

They don’t seem to care about their blatant hypocrisy, because no one ever calls them on it.

If people want to return a felon’s right to vote, then people should also want to return a felon’s right to bear arms.

Correct. Time is done, one is a Free Man again, w/ all Rights and privileges that may entail.

I find it most troubling that too many here believe in a tiered-Freedom system. We’re talking EX felons; if they were dangerous then they should STILL be behind bars.

If the Left were to use the same philosophy to deny ANY Right from (supposedly) (C), they’d be bitching and moaning 2-ways ‘til Sunday.

So, not letting felons vote is racist. I suppose the statistic that there are more Blacks that are incarcerated than Whites makes their claim. But my response to that issue is always ‘do you think the Blacks didn’t do a crime that put them in jail?’. If those Blacks would stop committing crimes, they would have a vote. But that doesn’t go very far with SJWs. There is always a reason, usually implicating Whites, that causes Blacks to do crimes.

The most telling thing in that Op-Ed is that the editorial board of the NYT thinks the United States is a democracy.

I’ve got no problem with that, in general, for non-violent felons.

However, I think the punishment for certain violent felonies should include a lifetime of probation, when/if the offender is released from prison.

There is a process to regain citizenship rights for such individuals, but the writers always claim it’s too slow, cumbersome.
>>

Those are the same people who claim that blacks are too stupid and/or lazy to get photo ID to vote.
>

But, the Left saying, “All you need to exercise your 2nd A. Rights is to fill out this registration and permission slip....” is *completely* different, right?

The Const. doesn’t grant, not acknowledge the scope of our Rights, only that some may be suspended...in certain circumstances. Nothing noted that requires said, again Citizen, requiring the ‘masters’ leave’.

We don’t go far enough. There should be a political literacy test.

Used to be only property owners could vote, not such a bad idea.

Convicted felons have to live with the consequences of their actions.

Conduct a test with prison inmates. Conduct a vote on the proposal to allow drugs in prison.

I wonder how that vote would turn out? /s

“Tacit admission that felons by and large vote Democrat.”

Corollary-

Democrats, by and large, are Felons.

Dicto Simpliciter
but it reads well . . . s/

I agree with you on the voting part, at least. Except that people who commit vote fraud should lose the franchise for life.

Typical forgetting of history by the NYT. Post-Civil War revocation of the franchise was not initially “racist,” i.e. against blacks, but directed against white Confederates for rebellion as written in the 14th Amendment.

I have to give the Leftists credit.

They don’t leave any stone un-turned, and as a screen writer in the series “Turn” attributed to George Washington: “Many Mickels make a Muckel.”

They go for the outright fraudulent vote. They go for the dead vote. They go for the infirm vote. They go for the illegal vote.

And they go for the Felon vote.

I heard it said once that 100K votes applied in the appropriate places around the country could swing a landslide one way to a loss the other way, and I don’t doubt it.

They are covering all the bases.
