So far as I can tell, it looks like Winter in the Northeast.

Who came up with the stupid bomb cyclone name in the first place and why is everyone going along with it?Explosive cyclogenesis
In the 1940s and 50s meteorologists at the Bergen School of Meteorology began informally calling some storms that grew over the sea "bombs" because they developed with a great ferocity rarely seen over land.[12]
By the 1970s the terms "explosive cyclogenesis" and even "meteorological bombs" were being used by MIT professor Fred Sanders (building on work from the 1950s by Tor Bergeron), who brought the term into common usage in a 1980 article in the Monthly Weather Review.[8][12] In 1980, Sanders and his colleague John Gyakum defined a "bomb" as an extratropical cyclone that deepens by at least (24 sin φ/ sin 60˚)mb in 24 hours, where φ represents latitude in degrees.

There’s a few whitecaps on those waves - that means winds are about 15-20 knots.
Isn’t that regular winter?

Whats the big deal... 18 snow equals 1.8 of rain... we get that in an hour sometimes... It's more than just the snow fall.
Coastal flooding due to storm surge (yes, it happened because of this extreme low). That caused coastal flooding. And there was a combination of ice, slush, and water. High winds, the current moon phase, and other factor have combined to make this more destructive and dangerous.

Yes. The problem seems to be storm surge coupled with high tides.

Matt Doody, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Taunton, told the Boston Herald that the Weather Service couldn't 'officially' call it a new recordHeh, Beavis, they said "doody".

Meteorologists in the 1940’s and 50’s. Technically need 24mb drop in 24hrs to qualify. I would guess TV has popularized it

It’s at times like these that I reflect on just how powerless we humans are when it comes to nature. Sure we can damn rivers, clear forests, even plant forests, we feel as if sometimes we’re omnipotent over it all. And then God makes it snow, sends hail storms, rains, droughts and earthquakes and the more sensible among, the believers in HIS presence and power realize we don’t control squat. It’s things like this that make me shake my head in bemusement and disgust at the “Climate Changers’’ who think we have to power to somehow effect of of this.
