“I’m probably a bit rusty but I did get some practice with Mount St. Helen’s ash.”
I was a sophomore in high school at the time but do remember the explosion. Here in eastern Minnesota, I don’t recall a lot of ash fall but do remember the sunsets were more vivid than usual for a while.

I live at the bottom of the “K” in Kill Zone.
Have a pocked-marked lava ‘stone’ from the last eruption...it was excavated from about 30’ down during a building project.
Really cool!

Bear in mind this chart mostly relates to immediate threat from the ash for suffocation, or a bit later structures suffering roof collapse.
Prior large ash eruptions and sulfur emissions have blocked enough sunlight to drop temps and otherwise harm crops and vegetation. Likely a decade to clear the sky.

The small red circle is the “Kiss Your Ash Goodbye Zone.”

how many inches of ash will collapse the roof to the average home do you reckon? I am pessimistic about even tertiary ash zones.
I'm optimistic that the "interesting" factor will be dialed all the way up to 11 on that fateful day.

Doesn’t matter if it is. When and if it blows off, there ain’t nothing we can do about it.

there are real dangers out there, but what can we do about it?...if there is something we can do, lets do it, otherwise no use worrying your whole life away...
besides, I've read some accounts where the world will survive and so will the US....

Here in eastern Minnesota, I dont recall a lot of ash fall but do remember the sunsets were more vivid than usual for a while. We got about 4" of ash where I was living in Northern Idaho. Used a snow shovel and then a broom to clear it off my driveway. Want to wear a mask over your nose and mouth if you ever have to move ash or you will have some really dirty boogers.

Id worry more about the New Madrid. A while back i was a map that showed the result of an 8.1 or so on the NM. Id be 300 ft underwater but my sister would have beach front property near Omaha.I'm in NE Kansas now. I'm guessing puts me in range of significant impact. If that quake pushes the water back in the Mississippi like last time, is likely to be a cascading effect up the Missouri River, the then Kansas River. I only live a couple of miles from the junction of the Kansas River and the Big Blue River.

i suspect the main problem with ash fallout in tertiary areas is air quality, which could be potentially fouled for decades as even a few inches of such dust would be completely pervasive and practically impossible to get rid of ...
