“I was only doing 74 mph. There were four lanes of traffic and I was in the slow lane, and I couldn’t figure out why he wasn’t passing me.”

Really? Only 74? In the slow lane?

More importantly: Since she had a phone, why didn’t she call 911?

Agree. But the article pretty much totally debunks the notion that AirDrop was the problem, then goes on to give info about how to disable AirDrop even when it is not the cause of the problem.

Trash journalism by a know-nothing “reporter.”

yep. you don’t want those functions to constantly know where you are, either.

location services are unavoidable for some apps — waze is an obvious example. access to location should be granted sparingly.

I keep location services turned off, but sometimes I forget to turn off wifi after I’ve used it and then get ads and such.

A couple days later I received a notification from Google requesting I rate the place.

Same exact thing happened with me.

I was in a Punta Cana resort, for a wedding. The second day there, I went around taking photos.

Instantly after shutting off the camera, Google had sent me a message asking if I wished to share the PUNTA CANA beach pictures with other Google users. They knew exactly where I was, in a foreign country.

I have decided to not share location with Google or any of their apps. Naturally, I know that won't stop Google from continuing to be invasive.

From the excerpt: “At 7:37 p.m. Feb. 24 the mother of nine had called 911...”

Google will track you even with Location Services turned off. The only solution is to get a phone with a removable battery and take the battery out (ever wonder why most phones don’t have removable batteries these days? )

A quick Google (yes, I see the irony) turned up this story to back up my recollections:

raw data from cell towers is nearly unavoidable due to the nature of the technology, but, yeah, I get your point.

wasn’t quite what the poster was talking about, though.

Or have a 1911 and go ahead and pull over

Only if you are stupid.

You have no idea what he has or how many he has with him.

Life is not some silly action flick.

I'm guessing you don't drive out in west Texas much. Speed limit on the interstate is 80 (it may be up to 85 in some places now), and with the usual 10 mph cushion, you need to stay in the slow lane if you want to keep it much under 85 to 90).

I've been on narrow back roads through the oilfield (the kind that may make a couple of 90 degree jogs at a section boundary) with speed limits of 75 and service trucks popping out of side roads. I confess I wasn't able to maintain the speed limit on those.

It could have been what they used. A large resort could be identified from tower triangulation.

I smell a "Lifetime" TV movie in the works …

Or a modern, high-tech remake of "Duel."

My Bluetooth (iPhone 8 & AirPods) works great through walls. I can leave the phone on the mid main level, and go pretty much everywhere in the house, upstairs or down, with no signal loss. The other day I went to Lowe’s, and was listening to rush on the AirPods, I almost got inside before I started to hear dropouts.

I had left the phone in the car, easily 100 feet away.

Bluetooth is getting better.

I suppose. but that sounded like it was just plain old Google location services matching your location to a business, and doing its scary ratings thing.

if he just turns location services off, I’m pretty sure the symptom he described will stop.

odder yet; My wife LIKES doing the ratings. There are rude waitresses all over the east coast that are sorry of that fact.

Wow...nice. I’ve got an old iPhone 6+ and a MacBook Pro Retina circa 2014. Both still work great (amazing longevity and reliability!).

I turn on AirDrop on my computer to send a file to my wife from the living room. Nobody found. I grab my computer and start walking toward the home office (behind one wall, but there is a 60 gallon hot metal water heater close to our line-of-sight). When I enter her room doorway, she pops up on AirDrop.

I use Bluetooth to send audio from my phone to the car system. Seem to be better range on that pair of devices. The cool thing is, if I take the phone out of the car without turning off the audio stream, it stops automatically and then resumes from where I left off when I return to the car. Doesn’t always work, but often enough to be really helpful. (that makes up for the many times my Ford Sync cannot find my Bluetooth device even though they are happily paired).

Sounds like some big improvements in Bluetooth. Thanks.

74 mph IS slow in Texas. Better get your butt over in that lane if you ain’t doing at least full 75 mph. 75 is legal in Texas were posted, and thats most 4 lanes.

I carry & use a cheap POS $26 flip phone.

When not actively making a call, it stays off. When driving, it is always off. That is what a voice mailbox is used for .....
