“Pitbulls are like white southerners or South African or Wehrmacht vets of the doggie kingdom”

Don't pitbulls usually win their battles?

Because persons persist in exposing the public to these horrible animals.

The head shots missed by a little too much. In the past, I stunned large cattle and hogs (over 600 lbs.) for slaughtering and butchering with a .22LR and never a miss. Stunned a large bull for some neighbors once with a .22. They all went out like lights.

From the front, the round needs to go into a tiny area *within* a half an inch above and between the eyes and at a slightly downward angle (not far from perpendicular, not too oblique). Applies to dogs, too—same anatomical target. From the side, the round needs to hit the midpoint between the ear and the eye. Imagine a straight line between the ear and the eye while viewing the head from the side.

Find something more powerful than a .22LR for defense against a charging pit bull, though. Too hard to hit the right spot on a fast moving animal. Accuracy is important.

Making sure that the round does not hit a bystander in the background is of the greatest importance. Be very aware that the round will most likely blow through the animal, ricochet off of the ground behind the animal and hit anyone in that direction.

If a small dangerous animal is latched onto someone and stopping the mauling is absolutely worth the risk, then fire at the spine and *away* from the person being bitten. And make sure that there is no one behind the animal in the direction that you are firing.

Study ballistics. Study anatomy.

A lighter round or a bullet without great expansion could also ricochet back at you from a bone in the animal. Shooting a dangerous animal in such a situation would be risky. Remember that ricochets can possibly come right back in your direction (e.g., hitting a rock perpendicular to its surface). If you’re going to try to put down a pit bull for a good reason, doing so with the animal away from any and all people would be best.

Be careful. This is not advice to tell anyone to shoot a dangerous animal with other people in the background (including anyone in houses in the background). It’s only a little information that might be helpful to someone who’ll do it anyway.

If using double-ought buckshot with an 18-and-a-half inch, 12-gauge straight cylinder (cylinder bore), you need to pattern it first by firing at a target from various distances. Your pattern shouldn’t be any larger than the front-view profile of the animal being considered. You might not want to fire a 12-gauge with 00 buck at a pit bull from more than about 10 yards.

Oh...and if you ever stun a large animal for slaughter with a .22LR, don’t use hollow points. Use the cartridges with heaviest round nose bullets.

A bowl of Prestone with Milk Bone biscuits broken up in it will usually do the job.

What is a man doing running out of his house with a gun?
Doesn’t he know that we must ban guns to save the children?

This 80 year old man, heard the noise, judged the situation, ran out of his house to his car to get a firearm, and then out to the street, where two teenage girls were tangled in the leash on the ground to their little dog which was being mauled to death in front of their eyes, shot the attacking dog and did save the children.

I’d rather have a bear attack me than a pit bull

I'd tell you the opposite.

Sorry, I think you must have posted to me by mistake? I did not say that.

One of the traits of the pit bull type dog is the “block-head” skull. So a head shot might not quite do it quickly.

Not only do they have block heads, their necks are solid muscle the size of a gallon paint can. They are great at grabbing and shaking. Give them the toughest chew toy and they will destroy it with their powerful jaws.

No matter what you are going to shoot them with, their head is going to be a rapidly moving target.

If you want one, get the help of a profession trainer if you have any trouble controlling it.

Great dog recount my FRiend!

And yes, the bigger the dog, the more hurt they can put on you. Most just wouldn’t. Millions of years of breeding made the pack animal that was the wolf and dog. They inherit the constraint of following the pack leader—never attacking.

When a dog does so, it is perverted from its instincts. It is malformed. Not natural.

Yes. According to the article, Mr. Wood, (hunting experience) warned the girls and their father away as far as possible, and then shot downward. Twice. Google shows a residential neighborhood, houses, trees.

Glad to that the little rascal is good.

I was walking one of my black and tan coonhounds last summer, and a couple came along with a German shepherd. Their dog clearly wanted to come over, so I asked if he was friendly, they assured me he was. As soon as the shepherd was close, he tried to latch onto the hound’s neck. For some reason I was expecting trouble and had the German by the neck real quick then proceeded to beat it in the back of the neck and base of skull. The stunned owners didn’t even react, they just stood there. The German was quite dazed, so I was able to remove my hound, and even after all that, my hound was still wagging his tail and wanting to play lol.

Had a pit try to attack my last black and tan years ago. The pit lunged, and the hound just folded on himself, I’ve never seen the likes, then the pit closed on empty air and before I could even say anything or move my hound had the pit by his neck pinned on the ground. He showed great restraint though and didn’t really hurt the other dog. I sure love those coonhounds heh. I’ve never seen such good dogs with kids, but when danger comes, they’re fierce protectors.

Pit bulls are ugly and vicious. Two shots to the head and still needed to be euthanized.

It may be time to classify pit bulls as similar to Lions as pets. A crazy chihuahua is one thing. A crazy pit bull is a completely different thing.

I used to be one of those “it’s the owner” people. Now, when I find out someone I know owns a pit bull, they go down a few notches in my book. Kinda like finding out a pretty girl has a butterfly tattoo (tramp stamp) on her lower back. I just see them differently.

Why the steady pit bull fetish here
*************************

Why don’t you read about the number of human ER visits due to pit bulls vs any other dog type?

In my opinion as a retired veterinarian, all pit bulls should be eradicated period. They are much too unpredictable and unable to be controlled when out of control which happens much too frequently.

14 months ago I got a little lab puppy. Last summer at a dog park a lady brought her pit bull to the park. I always stayed close to my lab to make sure he was OK. For no reason, the pit bull started to growl and I could see he was about to attack. So I picked my puppy up and spun around to put myself between the pit bull and my puppy. The thing came around and jumped up to attack FIVE TIMES finally biting my puppy on the paw and drawing blood. Others quickly hustled the pit away. I was Irate and started to go after the pit bull, but needed to take care of my little guy and while doing so the lady hustled the pit bull out of the park and away.

Another time at another park a lady brought her pit bull in and it went after my puppy with no provocation. She pulled it away but it broke loose and went after him again. I then jumped on it, got my hands around it’s throat with all my weight pinning it to the ground and I dug my thumbs so deep into its throat it screamed in pain. I then allowed the lady to put its leash on and take it away. I later learned that dog has a history of being a problem and has attacked other dogs with no provocation.

This is what motivated me more than anything else to take the class and get my ccw which I should have in a couple months. If anything like that we’re to happen again, I will pull out my gun and simply empty the entire magazine into the pit bull. I will. Not. Stop. And not one jury in this country would convict me of anything given pits’ reputation. For that reason, I doubt any DA would even charge me with anything.

One of my dogs’ good buddies is a pit bull so it’s not all of them, but of the real aggressive problem dogs, pit bulls make up a large percentage. I’m very leery of them until I know the dog well.
