Rush said this is meant to cover only 6 of the 350+ public pensions in Illinois.

Um, have you read Article XIII Section 5 of Illinois' Constitution that created an enumerated pension protection clause?

Illinois is screwed and a couple of years ago the Illinois Supreme Court unanimously as well as rightfully stated so when a Democrat administration tried to institute pension reforms.

First, the people will have to amend their Constitution which is no easy task. Then appease unions with actual reforms avoiding the political fallout.

To the current and future taxpayers of Illinois,

Yes, but overall - the DFW metroplex is a safe conservative option.

Jeez..... This plan covers just a small portion of overall pension debt.

Is there enough asset base or tax base to tax enough to pay off all the pensions?

I doubt it.

And maybe Illinois is the canary in the coal mine. Many other places are grappling with major pension liabilities which nobody knows how they will be paid for.

Amen?!
Really?

I was born in Illinois...for the most part raised in IL and that was before the dems took over...DuPage County was the most conservative/Republican county in the USA when I was growing up. This is my home and tho I lived all over the country (California, Missouri, Tennessee, North Dakota, Wisconsin), I moved back here for job opp, great family area and superb education suburb, oh and ailing parents/family.

Jobs and family keep many of us here-many of us who don’t vote Democrat. The state outside of Chicago is almost entirely Conservative...IL has if not the best farmland in the USA, then close to it BTW...

I really find your condescending comments about “Making bed...” annoying...and I seem to recall that you have written similar comments about California too. We don’t talk trash about TN residents...so why is it OK to dis IL residents?

I note you are from TN...I lived in east TN for nearly 4 years, was recently back for a visit this year. TN is not a jobs powerhouse...sorry, it is beautiful country and I love it, but it is not a commercial hub...Chicago area is a jobs power house, shipping hub and major commercial area...3rd largest city in US.

I don’t like that Dems have taken control, but I really find it disheartening that US citizens here on FR are so smug about the problems facing other US citizens...especially conservatives in other states like IL, CA, and OR.

If you really feel that “they have made their own bed” then it seems you are no different than many tyrannical Libs who delight when bad things happen to conservatives.

If you are for reducing pensions of employees, well, I am with you—but then again, they were promised them...it sucks for everyone in IL, and this problem is not unique to IL BTW...I think the DEM and GOP POLITICIANS who MADE these deals Should be tared and feathered—find them wherever they live and tax them! But please stop with the “They made their bed, ,because I didn’t just like people in TX didn’t when the dems opened the border...

They want tens of millions to pay for the retirement of tens of thousands. The sense of entitlement is sickening.

Yeah, and they are all coming here.

And forgive me for making broad sweeping generalizations but worst.people.ever.

Stupid economists, giving the rest of us a bad name. If I had a dollar for every time I have had to try to undo the damage of a fool with a Ph.D. in economics, I’d be able to pay off my mortgage.

Another poster asked how these clowns could get Ph.D.s in economics. Unfortunately, the answer is that they are edufactured in graduate programs. They are mostly mathematical, well, um, manipulators. Math is fine, but without knowing the underpinnings of the models they are manipulating or testing, it is sheer folly. And their prescriptions are sheer rubbish.

Bastiat nailed it. Good economists see what is unseen. Bad economists see only what is seen - in the present day. Do they really think there won’t be more pension crises and other desperate pleas for help from the public purse? Of course there will be - because these econofools incentivize slopping away at the public trough.

Does ANY of these three nitwits understand opportunity cost? Not on your life, or mine.

Sorry, should of added “I feel bad for you (Illinois taxpayers)”.

They will need the 10th Doctor too, though, to travel back to 1969 in the TARDIS to prevent amending the pension protection clause. So there is that too ;-)

How about giving the Government Employee Pensioners an Offer They Cannot Refuse!

Maybe they should raise the taxes on all of the people who have retired, and then moved out of the state, maybe 5 or 8% annually.

I've been through southern Illinois, and you could be in Tennessee or Kentucky by the looks of it. Really nice people, very few "jungles". Southern Illinois even has coal mines, and some counties are considered part of Appalachia.

There have been proposals to divide Illinois between neighboring states: Iowa, Missouri, Indiana, Wisconsin. The Chicagoland area would remain "Illinois". This idea has a lot of merit.

Overpaid is right. These are Cadillac pension plans. Those of us in the private sector are stuck paying for a lavish retirement plans that we can’t afford for ourselves.

THE SYSTEM IS GOING TO BREAK because the taxpayers will revolt.

Time to convert all public employee pensions into 401K style retirement plans.

The era of the defined benefit pension is OVER whether the unions like it or not.

I’ve got a much better solution.

It is TIME to DownSize DC!

Close entire Rogue Unconstitutional Departments including their SWAT Teams.

Anything worthwhile passed back to the States.

Cut the size of the Federal Government in 1/2.

And then spread the agencies that have no reason to be inside DC to other locations.

Move the center-of-gravity of the Fed Gov away from the DC snake pit and away from the Lobbyists.

Opps. This is the Chicago Fed discussing Illinois problems, not federal problems.

The problem with Illinois is in Chicago. Nothing short of a natural disaster will fix that. It will take an act of God.
