We also went across the border at the small stations in NE Wash. and N Ida. for ski trips into Canada.

They really had plenty of time to check the junk in your trunk to see if you were hauling electronic chips or other contraband.

And, when traveling into Canada for work, never tell them you are going to work for a few days at one of the assembly plants. Nope, just going to observe. And don’t try to haul along drawings or prototype parts or tools.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement did not respond to inquiries from The Associated Press on Saturday.

Tough noogies. If it's an open hearing they can get in line to hear the proceedings in court the same as anyone else.

Yes, that applies even to any and all "enemies, foreign and domestic."

I’m sure she had no idea she was near the border.
Riiiiiiight...

Accidental border crossings are as mythical as an "unarmed" violent thug of any age.

No such thing.

Let's just recall that "Hands up don't shoot" was an invention of the very same thug culture.
Criminal illegal immigrants operate under the same rules.

Did the same thing to an Aussie teenager who was leaving the US and overstayed by one day - was incarcerated for three weeks, her parents weren’t informed and went crazy for those three weeks. Guess they weren’t Latino/Somali/African enough to be just let loose.

I have zero tolerance or sympathy for any foreigner who overstays by even one minute.
If they have no clue about the seriousness of the rules, they shouldn't be running around loose without adult supervision in a country not his own.

Please spare me the "what if a toddler simply wanders off?" example.

Many in this thread seem to think the Canadian and US Border Protection officials were jerks, end of story.

She had an odd story, from France but illegally crossed the Canadian/US border, and had no ID on her. Doesn’t mean she is a terrorist, or smuggler but odd stories should and do raise suspicions.

People who are caught doing anything illegal at the border generally start lying right off. Odd story generally does mean someone is up to no good and lying. She may have been innocent and lied or told the truth, but we don’t know what she actually told officials.

I personally am glad they checked her out thoroughly, and it said in the article both US and Canadian officials had to investigate her, before she was released and allowed back into Canada. She had two governments to sort things out with, not just the US.

Her mother brought her her pass port but the border guards can not take that document at face value because it was not in her possession initially

that is a little surprising, no matter who is holding it I would think it is an official govt document.

FYI, here are some facts about this apparently accidental border crossing. I saw the woman interviewed on the news and got the feeling she was telling the truth but obviously I can’t be sure. But here’s what I know ...

She was jogging on a beach at White Rock (B.C.) which starts out quite busy but if you jog east for about a half mile it gets deserted. It is not really close to the highway, border crossing points and the Peace Arch and if you were looking more at the view over the water you might not notice those. There is a train track that runs between the beach and the highway. Also, the U.S. customs are actually about a half mile into the U.S.A. so she might not have even seen all of that before the agents picked her up.

I can believe that somebody from France who had never been to White Rock before might have no idea that they were close to a border. Apparently there are just small and rather unobtrusive signs informing anyone that they are approaching a border. Anyone who lives in the area would know this and not need a sign to tell them because the beach ends just about where the border hits the bay (and the shore then curves south into WA).

She probably had no idea that she had jogged across the border. But like I say, no way of knowing for sure.

Pass Ports are stolen and falsified on a regular basis.

If someone else brings one later with your face on it they can not say that it was not manufactured for the occasion.

“Larry got caught crossing the border. Run off a pass port for him.”

She should have brought children. My family and I crossed that border and were asked to step inside for questions. Our three young children started climbing the walls. We were free to go very quickly.

I arrived in Montreal on a business trip in the early 90s expecting the same DL ID to suffice. I nearly got sent back home at the airport for arriving without a passport. They let me in with a stern reprimand.

I just got back from a vacation in Alaska. One of the tours we were on took use up a highway to the Yukon.

The border station for Canada is about 15 miles inside the Canadian border because the altitude at the border makes it impassable most of the winter.

I can imagine if you reached the Canadian border station on that highway with nothing but your driver’s license you would have been in for the same treatment this woman got.

Some years ago a friend of mine from England came over and we were traveling about the Southwest. At a border patrol station some 70 miles from the border all cars were being stopped and asked a few questions. When they asked my friends nationality he said British. They asked to see his passport which he had left at my home a few hundred miles away. He did not know he needed it to travel internally in the USA.

The border patrol agents were stern but polite. They told him he must always carry his passport and sent us on our way in about 3 minutes. It was obvious we were not criminal aliens or drug smugglers. That is what they were really looking for.

If she had asked for asylum, she would have received a temporary work permit and eligibility for government benefits.

Our family had spent some time in Canada. My daughter had her bike in the back of our van. The US border guy could see it through the window. He stared at it for quite a while, as if he was thinking it might be a bomb disguised as a bike.

In front of us, an old woman had to take all her stuff out of her trunk.

Meanwhile, in another lane, a guy who looked like Khalid Shaikh Mohammed drove a pickup full of boxes through with no trouble.

You never know what is going to happen.

They were very interested in where she got her invisible sandwich.

Are you saying (POSSIBLY) she contacted someone in Canada and they manufactured for her a valid FRENCH passport, and the lady brought it to the girl?
