I couldn’t even stomach the first movie. For some reason my sister-in-law kept insisting I see it, but not being interested, I kept demurring. One day when we were visiting, she flipped on the movie. The first 5 or 10 minutes was basically a group of giggling girls walking on a beach or through a town. That was pretty much all I could stand so I snuck out to find something less mind-numbing to do.
My favorite sister is a theater fan, so I agreed to attend a Broadway show with her a number of years ago. It was the original “Mama Mia”. I remembered ABBA’s music, and I didn’t like it or dislike it beforehand. Now, I hate it.
I was convinced that someone had paid ABBA and then used their songs to patch together a stupid story. Surprised to learn that they were actually involved in recycling their songs for this junk. They must be desperate for money.
You have to hand it to Rex... this is a slasher of a review
In other words it’s a chick flick.
The first movie sucked, so it makes sense that the sequel will, too. And pay money to see Meryl Streep? I think now.
(But don’t be dissing ABBA.)
Abba is not music for a musical.
Many years ago, when I still cared about such things, I would read Reed’s reviews. If he loved a film I was certain it was one I needed to miss. And vice versa. In this case, though, Reed might be right on the money. Either he’s gotten better over the years or I’ve gotten worse. The original Mamma Mia was execrable. Can’t imagine a sequel being better.
Well I am ready of Denzel and Equalizer 2, mindless and I don’t have to think about the plot, next weekend MI 6 and I can’t wait for that one either. I want pure escapism and mayhem.
Love Rex! Glad he’s still reviewing!
“I remember when Dick Cavett, getting annoyed at him, asked him what was his favorite color.”
What was it?
I was so surprised to see this was his review too. It’s a great pan, which I always love!
