Because as the article even states in history a man taking the last name of the woman means the woman is higher up the hierarchy than than man. The man is admitting he is a Beta. One of the more notorious examples was the husband of Elizabeth Báthory, the most prolific serial killer in history, took her name because the Bathorys were one of the most powerful families in Hungary.

Some have attempted work-arounds: the Smiths and Taylors who have become Smith-Taylors, Taylor-Smiths, or—more creative—Smilors. In three generations liberals will be named things like Bob Smith-Jones-Finley-Kirk-Gable-Manning-Stewart-Goldberg-Gleason-O'Malley-Kent.
