so do not buy tomatoes out of season....not even those "vine ripe" ones.....every single one tastes like cardboard...
grow your own in the summer or buy from a neighboring farmer...
its like the red "delicious" apple....omg...like cardboard...awful...tasteless...but it was bred so it would be easy to ship....easy to pack...uniform....
but its only uniform to me is its horrible taste.....

The bland, sterile, and cardboard-tasting tomato is the result of what happens when well-meaning people tries to improve something.

Toughened up for shipping and appearance, I’ll bet.

I remember getting a fresh apple off the tree in North Carolina. It was huge and tasted just as good as ice cream.

When I was a kid my parents would buy a bushel of tomatoes from a farmer. My brother and I loved it and we would sit on the front porch and eat as many as we could. A little salt. Until we got those little cranks on our lips from ingesting too much Vitamin C.

Until their last few years my parents always had a garden.
I don’t know the exact reason but home grown vegetables are way, way better than commercial ones.

Can you ship those tomatoes you like so much to grocery stores around your state and have them end up on the shelf in eatable shape?
I’d guess not.

Pretty much, yes. When farm workers started going on strike, research was started to find a tomato that could withstand machine picking (actually more like machine shaking the plant until the tomatoes fell off). Alas, the tomato that resulted lost a lot of its flavor.

It’s an interesting story.
One of the reasons American vegetables are not as tasty is that American consumers don’t care enough to select sweet ones.
In countries like Japan and France, where the culinary tastes of consumers is more demanding, the fruits/vegetables are better.
So it’s all in our collective power to change the situation. Maybe this is another problem Trump can help us solve!
I have a quiz that I will answer to when I get a few responses.
There is a sure fire way to tell if a tomato is sweet or not (short of tasting it or cutting into it). What is that method?

The next step is to 3-D print them out at home.
Eventually there will be a “food” synthesizer printing out a picture perfect meal.

Did you know that the tomato is a fruit? It actually is, you know. It certainly does not taste like one today. Fruit: In botany, a fruit is the seed-bearing structure in flowering plants formed from the ovary after flowering.
Nothing about sweetness in there. A zucchini is a fruit too.

There is a sure fire way to tell if a tomato is sweet or not (short of tasting it or cutting into it). What is that method?Well, if squeezing out a drop of juice doesn't count as "cutting into" then this is certainly a good method.

Nope.
And that is the problem.
It is the same case with thin skinned watermelon. They taste wonderful and when we take them to market we are sold out in under an hour. But the market is only two miles away and we pack them very carefully.
If we had to ship them 100 miles they would be unsaleable.

I would go out into the garden and eat tomatoes several at a time with a little salt....never taste anything better...

It certainly does not taste like one today. Though, it really used to. Tomatoes used to be sweet and delicious. They used to eat tomatoes with sugar because they were sour.
