So its moving through the universe on the same course and speed as our solar system? If its distance from us is consistent then it would appear to be orbiting the same thing that our solar system is orbiting. If it isnt orbiting anything it would be falling away from us about 515,000 MPH because we are hauling ass going this way.

It’s 20 LIGHT YEARS away.

That's just around the corner in celestial terms.

Heh. I thought maybe that since the damn thing won’t sit still, by the time you push the button it’s already moved.

What the? If the thing is only 20 light years away, why is there no photo?

Because a photograph of it would show the point-spread function of the telescope/detector used to photograph it. That, along with spectra, would be useful to scientists but not to mass media.

From the article:

It was first detected using a radio telescope, the National Science Foundation's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array.

Maybe they should tape a wire coat hanger to it.

You’re more than welcome to pick up an optics textbook and study the topic yourself.

Or you can wallow in ignorance.

Your choice.

Have an A1 day!

The PSF is introduced on page 404 in my 1979 copy of Hecht & Zajac.

Photo of a planet 20 light years away?

One light year, the distance light travels in a year, at its speed of 186,000 miles per second, works out to about 5.9 TRILLION miles.

In 20 light years, I’ll be dead. Doctor says I’ll be lucky to survive the next 10 light years.

It’s 20 LIGHT YEARS away

Or nearly 120,000 BILLION miles away (20 x 5.9 trillion miles).

120,000,000,000,000 miles

Deal. Send me your book so i can bone up on optics and whatever and I’ll send you my copy of The Far Side so you can discover the joys associated with a sense of humor. My favorite is page 106. These goldfish are talking to each other outside their bowl while their castle is engulfed in flames, so....you know what? Never mind. You’ll probably suck the funny right out of the book. Sheesh. Eggheads.

Thanks, but I already have a couple of Far Side books. They're hilarious.

Hecht & Zajac is still in print. Except that Zajac is dead, so it's just Hecht now. Enjoy.
