Large bovines can eat a bale of hay per day, and they equate humans with food. Those cattle probably were thinking it’s feeding time and moved on in to get fed.

Your right 16 cows isn't considered a herd in many places.

I use to help out a friend whose herd got up to 60 head. I can remember pulling into the field, not much happening, until I started to unload the vegetables we got from a company that sold packaged salads. They (the cows) went nuts looking for the carrot tops, like if it was some type of drugs. I can still remember the sound of thunder from there hoofs, charging the truck, and I'm on the ground spreading the pile, to give them all a fair shot at the pile, shaking in my boots, until they slowed down. :-)
