Imagine being the civilizations that pointed their telescopes toward the galaxy and realizing it would hit head on.
I don't think the Coriolis Effect has much if anything to do with it. No object caught in a gravitational field is going to go directly toward the center of the source in a straight line. They will spiral in, a combination of their being drawn directly straight in and their original path, which will almost certainly be at least somewhat different.
