That was the point, a threat, a threat they can place blame on unhinged mob like republicans. That was the goal, they got the headlines they wanted, a news cycle they wanted and it changed the discussion from illegal army of invaders, tax cuts, and jobs not mobs, to violent republicans sending democrats bombs!
The threat worked.
