Congratulastions on 20 years on FR. I passed the 20 year mark last March and have no intentions of going anywhere else.
It wasn’t a web site in the later sense in its first years, of course. But it first came onto the early versions of the internet around the time Clinton was elected.

To an extent I agree. Dear friends of mine were banned and many left during those bannings. I even joined some of the alternative sites they started.
But I also understood this is Jim Robinson’s house and he makes the rules.
I think we allow much more diversity of opinion on the Sunday Talk Show thread but still pretty much agree on most issues. In any case, disagreements are handled there courteously, and I try to keep personal attacks out of it. Nobody is perfect. Even I’ve made mistakes.
Still, I think folks have to be courteous. When you’re not, you look like an ass to others. I know some people, even if they’ve have that insight, still don’t care, but don’t see that the reason others think they are an ass is NOT because of their opinions about the issues, but how they TREAT others that disagree with them or they disagree with.
As we all grow older, we need to constantly remind ourselves of this.

I was stationed overseas, from the end of the 1st Gulf War until 1997, so I really missed out on the Internet in politics beginnings.
Not to say I wasn’t aware of the Internet—I was running overseas communications sites, but didn’t have my own computer to “play” on until returning stateside.
Politically it was kind of rough for me. I left an America that had just fought (and later won) a war, George HW Bush was at 87% approval, the successful Reagan years had just finished, and I finally come back and a Leftist scumbag is President? I thought, “What the hell happened to you people?!” LOL!!!
The political shift from 1991 to 1997 is still a mystery to me. In 1991, even Saturday Night Live was pro-America and Dana Carvey’s Bush imitations were done only with humor and no malice. I come back and see them all dogging the hell out of Newt Gingrich, Bob Dole, and Trent Lott. What happened?

I donate every month. Been doing so for years; through times when I’ve been rich to dirt poor. 22 years in the Military; 20 years teaching at a university. Going from a good middle class home life to a divorced guy with child support an a greedy Ex. I might up it a little as I’m now getting a second retirement check.

What branch of the military were you in? My dad also retired from the Army. I was 98C in the Army and left as a sergeant after 5 years. I should’ve stayed in!
