Still missing the old fire-brewed Stroh’s. :(

The old Airliner bar in Iowa City had Bud, Schlitz, Pabst and Miller on tap.

Man! What a line up of crap beers! I’d have a Schmidt’s just for old times sake because we’d sneak my friends dads Schmidt’s.

They should have thought about that when they sold their huge new brewery in Georgia to Heilman. There’s still a Pabst, Ga.

That was about the same time that they cheapened Red, White, and Blue to the point that it became undrinkable. Gross mismanagement in the 1980s coupled with the later move to California (what competent businessman would move a company FROM Texas TO California?).

I’m not much of an alcohol consumer, and certainly not much of a beer drinker. But, what I do know is that multiple local (as in: “relatively small”) wineries have found their way onto the shelves at local (regional) Wal-Marts. If these businesses with limited resources and name recognition can do it...

and is North America’s largest privately held brewing company

How can they be the largest privately held brewing company if they aren't brewing, just slapping labels on someone else's beer? The microbrewery they run in Milwaukee really churns out more than other privately held microbreweries?

Because MillersCoors produces so many other beers, they had a contract to keep producing Pabst so as not to create/become an over-reaching monopoly. By not renewing the contract, that’s the boundary they over-step?

If so, I wouldn’t have guessed it. Thanks for the clarification!

Effectively knocks a dozen beers out of the market for sure reason of not wanting to compete against them anymore. Cheaper than buying them out and about as illegal.

I think hipsters watched the movie Blue Velvet as kids because they were all into dark, edgy, weird movies and David Lynch was a go-to guy for that. Everyone had forgotten about PBR until till Lynch threw it front-and-center into his movie. And when the hipsters came of age...I think PBR was the first beer they tried and certainly one to have in your hand to start a conversation. Also, as an old, traditional, and cheap beer it’s ironic (because hipsters re-invented irony, donchaknow) to have PBR in the cooler along with the other trendy microbrews.

If they own it or the controlling stock in it, they are the owners are are credited with success or failures. Many different companies do their business and collect their revenues this way. Probably the most notable is Sears. They own Craftsman tools and have been selling them for years. And their road handler radials are made for them by Michelin in France.

Some protect from taxes. One problem they have is when selling in another countries may have to change their name or slogans when they realize their mistake.

A couple of products you might recognize, two from the beverage world are:

When Coca-Cola entered the China market, they named their product something that when pronounced, sounded like, “Coca-Cola”. The only problem was that the characters used meant “Bite the Wax Tadpole”. When they learned of their blunder, they later changed to a set of characters that meant “Happiness in the Mouth”.

When Vicks first introduced its cough drops in the German market, they were chagrined to learn that the German pronunciation of “v” is “f” which in Germany is the guttural equivalent of “sexual penetration”.

Pepsi expanded their market to China, they launched with the slogan, “Pepsi brings you back to life.” What they didn’t realize is that the phrase translated to “Pepsi brings your ancestors back from the grave.” This may seem like a pretty funny mistake ... but to the traditional Chinese this was a huge mistake, especially when you’re trying to build a brand on a global level. Uh..oh....

And here’s one that fits right in with these boards:

FIAT released an ad in Italy in which actor Richard Gere drives a Lancia Delta from Hollywood to Tibet. Gere is hated in China for being an outspoken supporter of the Dalai Lama – there was a huge on-line uproar on Chinese message boards commenting that they would never buy a FIAT car again or first time.

Can’t say as how I blame them. But I hate him for other reasons. The good thing for China here is that when the little liberal a$$half finally comes through on his promise to move out of the US if Trump had been elected, and was, I don’t think even he is stupid enough to try to move to China. His organs will disappear and sadly rot someone else.

Having multiple heart surgeries, and living with blood thinners, I can’t consume alcohol anymore at all. I used to love a cold beer, or more, on a hot day. And for many years, one of the most used products to put back water for athletes to fight dehydration was beer.

I asked my nurse in cardiology why I can’t have alcohol. She sternly told me that alcohol and blood thinners do the same thing and if I consumed, it would be dangerous.

Now you know what I suggested...I’ll just stop the pills and drink. Hope she doesn’t get to give me an injection soon. That look she gave me knocked me back about a foot. I don’t think I have the imagination as to how or where she’ll stick that shot I mentioned

The Coca-Cola story in China is apparently an urban legend; what’s true about it is that shopkeepers did create their own signs to represent the name of the product phonetically before the company itself did, but none of the phonetic precursors came out specifically as “bite the wax tadpole” (蝌蚪啃蠟 is pronounced Ke dou ken la actually; another alleged phrase, 騍馬口蠟 or Ke ma kou la, translates as “mare mouth wax”).
