The young squirrel with the inheritance probably starts taking drugs and living a worthless wasted life of indolence while spending away his bequest on wild female squirrels 🐿

As long as the little monsters stay out of our attic, I don't mind them. Unfortunately they don't so it is 22 verses the Squirrels and the 22 is undefeated.

They talk about living off the work of the former owner and how much his wealth can extend the life of others.
To me it’s a justification to kill off rich, old men and take their stuff.

Doesn’t the food stored for years go stale or spoil, given the usual moisture and lack of cleanliness in a tree hollow?

Our squirrels get fed ever day. Corn, peanuts, sunflowers and other treats. All of them are third and fourth generation welfare recipients. There are eight or nine daily regulars including two white squirrels and four or five occasional visitors and four or five chipmunks and an occasional field rat not to mention the flocks of birds.
The Great Society is alive and well here.

When first moved into our house about 1986, I noticed a male squirrel with a short tail. Every couple of years I would see new ones with short tails. This guy, when he got old, I saw him run up a telephone pole but not jauntily. Instead, he would grab and stop, grab and stop, sorta like me when I try to walk up five flights of stairs. He has been gone for a while but I am still seeing his short-tailed progeny.

We had a short tailed squirrel on our property for a short time. I think he had an “accident” (that might have involved one of our dogs) because the tail showed up on our back porch one day.

At first I thought that our squirrel had gotten his tail whacked off by a dog, but he would have had a stump instead of a nice plume at the end.

Can't stand them, destructive, disease ridden, flea infested dirty little RODENTS.
Like you said, they are just "Rats with bushy tales".

They are not so cute when they start destroying your home. And they are obnoxious busy tailed rats that won’t go away no matter how much you threaten or disturb them. The only thing that seems to work is a cat that is willing to stalk them.
They are fine when they stay outdoors.
