You bring up good points. How do they decide who gets to be ‘parent 1.’
This could devolved into a similar fight over which one has to wear the strap-on.

The error in this thinking is obvious to anyone with half a brain.
"Mother" and "Father" are objective designations, understandable to anyone without being explained. And since children proceed from a mother and a father, the convention is wholly appropriate.
In a subjective "family," who get to be Thing 1 and Thing 2? Do they get to change places whenever they want? If so, do records have to be updated, ALL records? If Thing 1 leaves Thing 2 and then Thing 1 meets another Thing 1 and they become an item, what's to be done with the child's records?
