Hey where’d the Science go! Lets get back to giant insects!

If you want some really big insects you have mutate them with radiation! That means you go to Illinois! home of the first controlled nuclear reaction, (Fermi and U of C Bleachers! Batavia and the accelerator, Tell Labs the first Transistor!)

Here’s what you get when you mix grasshoppers with atomic power and science stuff!

I agree. I do not know why we let idiots import things like poisonous snakes!

We have enough problems with things like Giant Japanese Hornets that don’t die after stinging you and Africanized bees that swarm you to death!

(Fermi and U of C Bleachers! Batavia and the accelerator, Tell Labs the first Transistor!)

An interesting choice of locations?
I have worked in all of them except Fermi Lab, for extended periods of time.

At the University of Chicago, they have a sculpture, marking the site of the first manmade nuclear chain action. IIRC outside the bookstore. (1980’s)
Starting a new project, my buddy the leader is doing the walkthrough.
I said, “Isn’t this near the original site?”, Bad.
We were very, very close!
The lower level corridors are complicated, people get lost often.
My late father in law prided himself that he knew his way around down there. Hint: the lettering system spells A-M-P-S around the cafeteria.
After he regained his composure, he explained that Health-Safety had reviewed, approved and checked the location.
I still talk to Dave occasionally but have NEVER EVER brought it up again.

At Bell Labs, I heard of an odd project, got some friends to take me by for a look.

A large copper lined Faraday cage, but wait! There is more.
It was also dampened for vibration, everything was suspended or sitting on dampers for vibrations.

Anything connected to it was isolated, the water connections, HVAC... EVERYTHING.
Monster isolation transformers for the power...

The best part... the hall door was a normal office door, but down a short hall was a huge VAULT DOOR!!!!
With the big wheel like from a ship and the combination thingy!!!

At the time EVERYTHING was hush/hush.
Even the project name!!!

Most did not know the name, they called it (dropping to sotto voce) The CIA room.
That was long, long ago and I have seen piles of surplus equipment that was tagged with the name. Long over.

Project Tempest.

I would love to blab on it but even today, I not sure how much is public.

Fun times.

And Argon too, totally connected with U of C.

Many places for some critter to be irradiated, and with the APS (Advanced Photon Source), new types of beams to be hit with.

????

https://www.cranksmytractor.com/2013/03/young-aunt-bee-frances-bavier.html

Tracing down the picture and finding it out it was a hoax, the lady in the picture was actually Gloria DeHaven. She was a beautiful lady and famous for her work in the theatre, movies and television. Later in her career, she made guest appearances on The Love Boat, Murder She Wrote and Marcus Welby, M.D.

As much as I’d like it to be true...

And Frances Bavier woulda been 49 at the time of that film.....1951

This is aunt Bea as a young woman
