It’s probably even more idiotic that mechanics are working hard to convince the public that their fleet is falling apart and causing system wide delays.
It’s called killing your own job - at a company that historical treats employees very very well.
Yup...the sad thing about them, because I do believe they ‘can’ do some good, is the greedy ass bosses and shop stewards. For them, it’s all about loyal members so they can extort money from, those very same members and the companies. I guess that’s one of the reasons they are in line with the Dem’s bringing in all the cheap labor. They’ll be able to force them to join their unions, while everyone else is walking away from them.
I’m not really tracking with what you’re saying, but I think I was pretty clear that there is definitely a dark and shitty side to them. And, while they can do some positive things, the bad usually far outweighs the good. They’re losing their place at the table and they know it.
Isn’t Texas an open shop state?
Exactly. The unions got their hooks into some folks and they’re trying to play some games. They’re promising the moon and some are lapping that crap up. Won’t be hard for Southwest leadership to identify those people, get rid of them, offer some promotions for some of the loyal, hard workers and get things back on track. I know some folks that have used the airline and they said it was a great experience.
Just great. I be flying on them soon.
I’d be willing to bet it is, but even in Right To Work states, the companies have the option of acknowledging the union(s). Kind of like Delta. They can’t do much about the pilot unions, but it does its level best to keep the flight attendants from unionizing.
Depending on how you look at it, the good or bad thing is, the Fair Labor and Standards Act details damn near everything that goes on between an employee and employer. It’s about as long as the tax code. Get the right FLSA attorney and there’s nothing the union can offer you, other than taking your money for nothing, that you can’t get done with said attorney.
Few people understand what the FLSA can do though. Market wages are just that. Anything above or below that is an artificially imposed construct that must exist by force by the benefited party.
“Isnt Texas an open shop state?”
Yes it is. A buddy of mine retired from American. I asked him one day about union or not and he said you can join or come out to find all the tires flat and the glass knocked out of your car.
I understand that as well. A guy that works with me dropped out of the local carpenters union in a right to work state. Same things happen. He said that he is making the same now that he did as a union member after he had to pay the union dues. He also figured out who benefited from all those dues and that strike pay and the strike also benefit the same people that do not include the ones who pay the dues or suffer through the strike.
This kind of thing is a big reason why maintenance - and manufacturing - have largely moved offshore.
“So, in summation, unions can be scum...”
No, unions ARE scum! My wife had an uncle who was a union carpenter all his life. When we visited, I chanced to see a copy of the union’s “magazine” there and looked it over. Communist Russia or China could not have written a more hateful tome! The visceral hate unions have for Capitalism is palpable.
What's really chapping the union's a$$ is the likelihood that some of the maintenance is being done in Mexico.
“why would workers sabotage their own good thing?”
Greed and shortsightedness.
To each his own. My dad and my family had a decent experience with one. That’s all I can say. And, my dad NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, EVER, NEVER, EVER, voted for a Democrat. And he would become rather irate if you alluded to that.
But, when all we are exposed to is the SEIU, the likes of Richard Trumpka, knowing that obama was allowed to make up his own rules to take care of the union bosses, the teachers unions all over the country protecting predators, public employee union leaders threatening or complaining about the world coming to an end even though everyday folks go through the same things and they don’t have a loudmouth union rep in front of a camera, one can easily have an outright loathing for them.
On a side note, there should be absolutely no such thing as a public employees union. Roosevelt said it the best, regardless if he was a commie, at heart.
“On a side note, there should be absolutely no such thing as a public employees union.”
ABSOLUTELY!
And you know the funny thing, my wife’s father was the only republican in his family (who were dirt poor farmers), and he was the only one who, by the sweat of his brow, built a business that today (now run by one of his sons) does $500 million a year! I am only sorry that he isn’t alive today to see the end result of his toil. The rest of them were slaves to their unions and the RAT Party!
Yep. Most unions and many of their members have a allegiance to their union and a hatred of their employer. I had a interaction with a union guy once who was upset at his employer abd actively telling people to patronize the competition to show the company whose boss and make them loose as much money as possible.
Guess what, people did. Said Competitor Kept many of the customers they told and a bunch of union guys lost their jobs or had reduced hours. But hey, You showed your employer who was boss and lost your job. good job.
Years ago,one of my customers was a Southwest union hall. I spent a day or so trying to fix the original installers mess so as I did so I got to listen to the conversations going on in the big “living room” part.
Guys got off of work and went in and carped about how awful everybody, everything, and the company was, for hours.
I got the impression that was what they lived their life for.
is it wise to fly in a plane the mechanics have intentionally been screwing with?
fire them all. Plenty of military vets with avionics experience who won’t screw around with passenger safety for inhouse political reasons.
