Contrary to popular belief, an American can have an interest in the rest of the world and still be a conservative. Those are the folks you have just met here. For example, I am known to have a preoccupation with Southeast Asia. In another FR thread, I promote a podcast I record, called the History of Southeast Asia Podcast. FWIW, I highly recommend the website, and despite my failure to actually get around to listening to much of the podcast, I highly recommend that too.
