Extinction is a way of life in nature. Tens of thousands of species went extinct before humans appeared on the scene. We may well go extinct ourselves some day, but not from human-caused climate change.

“The Bramble Cay melomys, a rat native to Australia, is claimed to be the first mammal to go extinct from “human-induced” climate change.”

I didnt think there were any mammals NATIVE to Australia. They only have marsupials.

Good. I hate rats

This so-called rat species looks a lot like the common brown rat that is everywhere on this planet. (Rattus norvegicus) - Tom

I have a rat problem in a mountain cabin, tried poison, sticky traps, spring traps nothing works. Who would have thunk it that all I had to do is turn up the thermostat a half a degree...

Australia is well supplied with rats.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_rodents_of_Australia

It appears their enviros pull the same trick as their US brethren by claiming tiny differences from region to region constitute a new "species." In the US that's used to invoke the Endangered Species Act to block development. In my neck of the woods that's been used to protect the Prebbles Meadow Jumping Mouse, which looks an awful lot like the critters that try to get into my house every winter.

Yup, they’re extinct, until they find colonies somewhere else.

“Let me tell you about endangered species, all right? Saving endangered species is just one more arrogant attempt by humans to control nature. It’s arrogant meddling. It’s what got us in trouble in the first place. Doesn’t anybody understand that? Interfering with nature. Over 90%, way over 90% of all the species that have ever lived on this planet, ever lived, are gone. They’re extinct. We didn’t kill them all. They just disappeared. That’s what nature does. We’re so self-important, so self-important. Everybody is going to save something now. Save the trees, save the bees, save the whales, save those snails. And the greatest arrogance of all, save the planet. What?

-George Carlin”

I listen to that every ‘earth day’ and make sure my outside lights are on for an extended time.

If there are/were a significant and increasing number of extinctions, this would be very concerning - as it might be a bellwether for worse, and an indication that something is very wrong.

That said, this species of mouse lived/lives (if they are wrong about extinction) on a small island off the Great Barrier Reef. It remains unclear how this mouse wound up there, and might have initially come to this Cay via the previously existing land-bridge to the mainland. The disappearance of that land bridge occurred 10s of thousands of years ago.

The Cay itself is <15 acres in land area, and the mouse (which lived/lives on the vegetated part of this Cay) had a habitat estimated at ~5 acres.

So, this was/is one very tenacious mammal that may have been trapped on this Cay thousands of years ago after the land bridge was covered by ocean, and has struggled to survive on a small land mass for probably thousands of years. If they wanted to save this species, they could have relocated several to the New Guinea or Australia mainland and monitored them.

So, I personally feel wistful about this mouse species, that has fought so hard to survive, but I think it is outrageous for anyone in the scientific community to blame the loss of this species (if indeed it is lost - and I hold out hope for these tenacious little critters) on human activity.

I had a neighbor once caught up in the Charismatic movement who wouldn’t use ant traps because she said they were God creatures and wouldn’t kill what God created!

The problem with religion today is too many have lost the common sense God gave them!
