So... These rats may well have come from rats in New Guinea, which may actually be exactly the same critter. (!) Given that the existence of the island itself is rather dicey, and storm patterns that impact it are bound to be subject to cyclical change, the rats had a tenuous existence at best. Then add hunting by humans and the dogs the humans bring along. Plus when the birds have good years, they tend to run the rats off good locations...
The report states that the sea level rise from 1901 - 2010, of 20 cm, is at “a rate unparalleled in any period during the last 6000 years”, while failing to note, of course, that the relative stability of the last 6000 years is an aberration in the pattern(s) of the last couple million years or more...
An equally if not more plausible hypothesis based on the raw information given is that these rats have been seeded, went locally extinct, reseeded, went locally extinct, over and over, for many thousands of years, if not longer.
Gosh - what made all the other countless species go extinct?...
