I'm not playing that stupid numbers game, trying to get the most out of SS over my remaining years. If my wife dies before me, there goes her pension. I'd rather have a larger SS check for my remaining single years. If I die before collecting any SS, so what? I'll be too dead to care.
How should I upgrade my skill set to squeeze out 5 or 10 more years?
I have 30+ years of software development experience but my skillset is rapidly becoming obsolete. If I get the axe, I want to be prepared.
What training, etc. do you suggext?
Do these man anything to you? IDE, Eclipse, JRE, JDK, servlet. If not, then you need updating.
Learn JavaScript I mean the ins and outs of the language, then master node.js, and I would recommend React or Vue.js. Not a fan of Angular.
Go to udemy.com. Plenty of great courses. There are also plenty of great courses on YouTube that are free.
I was seeing a lot (probably 20+) of “Systems Engineer with DOORS experience” (which I have) and every company’s job description read the same. I surmised that TACOM solicited bids on a contract and the companies are trying to gather resumes with contingency offers. I did not bother to apply.
That’s the kind of specific answer I was looking for. Thank you.
Almost all of the staffing firms cut & paste the job description from what they receive from the employer. Usually, I can find the employer in under five minutes with Google & LinkedIn.
Chewy.com has been looking for a couple of engineers to work on (fix) a project. I was told by a recruiter I trust that Chewy put the request out to the staffing firms to find someone. I’d bet a half dozen other firms got the same cattle call request.
You’re probably seeing the same thing with TACOM.
Eventually, Apu figures out Chewy is looking & your solicitations go through the roof with today’s fast-moving urgent requirement from hell.
I would take @hoapres advice:
“Your best bet is to abandon IT. Best of luck.”
Your age will be a factor in keeping you from being employed in this field after 40 years old. If you’re not Indian, that will be another factor in keeping you employed in this field.
Go visit dice.com & pull up jobs you might be interested in. You should notice that every job opening is demanding a different set of skills. How do you train for this job environment without being the equivalent of a dog chasing it’s tail?
If you look at dice.com today, you’ll see they claim to have just over 82,000 openings. By the time your remove all of the non-jobs from that count, you may be down to 8,200 “real” jobs nationally.
They probably are. FWIW I don't know how they could even get half-accurate numbers on this for legal American citizens. At some point you just have to assume that they're pulling all of this "data" out of their Nadlers.
